Default SUBSIM Regional Meets

I had pitched this idea some years ago, and sort of let is sit by the wayside and slip away. And I'm really not even sure of what level of interest we would have with this but the idea is for SUBSIM members regional meets.

As many of you know, generally we have an annual Subsim meet, depending on location, it is more convenient for some members to attend and unfortunately sometimes impossible for some to attend simply due to the distance or time or even cost of travel. My idea is to have several smaller meets throughout the year, which could occur annually, biannually or even quarterly depending on the level of interest from members in each region. My idea in it's present format is tailored for the United States, but other countries large and small, depending on level of interest of course, could create their own regional groups.

Of course none of the meets would be scheduled to interfere with the official annual subsim meet if one were to be held. another neat touch to this idea is that each region would "host" the "official annual subsim meet" each year that the meet took place within the USA. for example: if the 2016 subsim meet were in Panama City, Florida... the southeast region group would serve as a sort of host able to recommend good hotels, make reservations at dining, coordinate events locally on behalf of the overal subsim group, and some may even be willing to open their homes for the day for a cookout etc

The first thing that would need to happen would be to divide the United States into "regions". I have taken the liberty of drawing up just such a map as an example:

The second thing that would have to happen is for either a sub-forum would have to be created for each region OR one sub-forum created called "Regional Meets" with a sticky thread to be created for each region or some other means for the members within said regions to communicate and coordinate meets and activities.

Finally, the members of the group, once settled in would have to put their heads together and nominate a few members from each region to serve as a sort of coordinator which would be responsible for coordinating the events that the group comes up with for meets or events.

Each member could pitch an idea, such as a tour of a maritime museum or a museum ship in their region (and if none, perhaps a military themed museum or a camp out, or a trip to an amusement park - whatever) then using the forum poll tool, they could vote for the one they would most like to participate in and all agree on a date and time - there is your event! Following each event, members could post images to their individual threads to show the kinds of things our regionals are out doing and being involved in, and it could even provide for some fodder for the Subsim News page

the purpose of course of this is so that members who may not be able to easily travel from one side of the country to the other for the annual meet will still have a smaller regional meet they would be more likely able to attend.

so... with all of that said, what level of interest would folks have in helping to get such a thing off the ground?

You know I'm all for this.

Chicago has a type IX and Cleveland has the USS Cod.
Toledo has some cool stuff also like the Col. James M. Schoonmaker .
Do Ohio at the right time and you can attend the D-Day landing recreation also!

While we're at it, someone should regionalise Europe and Canada.

Better be quick then because the UK may not be in Europe for much longer

The UK not being all that large sizewise in relation to other countries I'd suggest an England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland structure/regional split or alternatively simply leaving the whole of the UK as a single region.

Finding members who would be willing to coordinate is obviously key.

I've been regionalising Europe, but is that even needed ??
Europe is not that big and simply saying ''how about a subsim meet in Amsterdam'' and anyone that can fly/arrive would come be it from London or Warsaw.

Don't forget the Airforce Museum in Dayton along with the Dayton Air show. And a day trip to Fort Knox for the General Patton Museum. I know they're not submarine related, but still military.

By the way, I'm all for this also.

hightower2! Really! And could Minnesota please be removed from the 'Midwest Meet' group and attached to Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Hockey, Hamm's and Moosehead will be discussed and served! We'll meet at the port city of Duluth...or Toronto! British Columbia can be attached to the Pacific group of course! Quebec, Newfoundland an Labrador can be with Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. After all it is an international forum; U boats did attack in the St Lawrence river and the Canadian Navy did almost half the escort work in the Atlantic." "The progression Canada made from 1939 to 1945 is astonishing, going from the limited amount of warships they had to becoming the third largest navy in the world is an achievement in itself, not to mention the role they played in informing the USN in intelligence and the increase in responsibility. Their primary role in protecting merchant ships from North America to Britain was successful. Throughout the war Canada had made 25,343 successful escort voyages delivering 164,783,921 tons of cargo. By the end of the war, German documents state that the Royal Canadian Navy was responsible for the loss of 52 submarines in the Atlantic. In return 59 Canadian merchant ships, and 24 warships were sunk during the battle of the Atlantic.“Canadians solved the problem of the Atlantic convoys” – British Admiral Sir Percy Noble"

I have spoken with my father recently about attending another meet sometime. Regardless of where it is located, we may stretch beyond the plains of the Midwest.
