Help with Oblivion?

I play this from the DVD, not online, and reinstalled it on my Windows 8 laptop today; it used to run beautifully, but now I've got everything except vision! Everything else is present (health icons, crosshair, sound, text-prompts etc) but it's like my character is in a darkened room. The auxiliary things work if you call them up too (i.e. maps) but I can't see where I'm going!

I tried running the DX setup from the DVD, even though I already have a higher version than the game requires, but no luck.

Try turning bloom on, fixed it for me when I had a similar problem.

Bless you, Dowly! It wasn't "bloom", but "HVR lighting"... it's been so long since I played this I'd forgotten all about these advanced settings, so thanks to you I found them again. How dim am I? Thanks again, buddy, I'm back in business!

Well, turning bloom on disables HDR lighting... so.. do I still get a cookie?
