I use to know the right way, its been awhile. If i do this wrong I lose everything. I am on patrol 4 and in no need of patrol 1 or 2, so how do i do this without losing everything?

I did that once, and really messed it up. I was very ...displeased... with myself for a few days.
Now I just tolerate it.

UKönig is correct. Do not delete previous patrols in a current campaign career. Each patrol's data is needed as part of your Captain's Personnel file. Deleting them will screw up stuff.
