I appreciate this happened in April of last year but still find this incident potentially quite worrying.

The Russian Su-24 then simulated a missile attack against the USS Donald Cook, which was left literally deaf and blind. As if carrying out a training exercise, the Russian aircraft - unarmed - repeated the same maneuver 12 times before flying away.

If this is true it's very worrying indeed. But I take it with a grain of salt.

The question I'm asking myself is...."If it was during a period of high tension would the ship have been able to detect the target earlier and shoot it down?"

Much would depend on air surveillance from a friendly platform such as an AWACS I should imagine.

There were two things in the article that caught my eyes and made me worried for an eventual future

Does this mean that a future enemy only have to do so, to neutralize the crew?
I thought that they were trained for such a thing.

I'd have thought it highly unlikely.
