I am reading Michael Gannons "Black May" and according to him there was only 4 guys on watch at a time. The OOD (1st W.O or 2nd W.O.), 1 petty officer and 2 seamen.
All this time SH3 has 5 guys on watch and not 4. 1. Is this correct information?? 2. With all the great mods I can't believe this was not addressed. No biggy I am just a bit shocked that if it was really just 4 guys that UBI would mess up such an easy detail. ![]() |

Apparently the programmers realized their mistake and while unable to recode to correct it, compensated for it. The lazy Watch Officer stays in the nice dry forward quarters unless you drag his butt up onto the bridge. Now you only have 4 men up top. Of course, without the WO, they'll never tell you what they see.....BUT THEY ARE THERE.

There seems to be no problem, getting all 5 through that hole in the floor during a crash dive. Occassionaly 'tubs' Thor get wedged in the hole, but the rest just jump on top of him, and he flies down the tube like a teflon turd.

The VII's and IX's have way too many crew overall in most areas. I run with about 38-40 total crew and never more than four officers. The Type II, however, could do with a few more.
Even my torpedo PO's have to take their turn on watch, no more endless games of cards in the bow quarters. The only time extra bodies are needed is when loading torpedoes and how much of total patrol time does that take? @ Raptor, are you also known as 'Raptor F22' on the Ubi SH3 forums? KH |

One of the ways to alleviate the "too many crew" in the lists, is to research the crews on boats at loss, and use those. Particularly in the early war, using real names with real ranks and qualifications makes for interesting manning. Especially as you start to learn just how many were technical ratings versus general ones.

From all accounts that I have read, and having stood bridge lookout duty myself, the usual compliment is 4. One pair of eyes/binoculars for each 90 degree sector, two forward, two aft. When the Captain or senior watch officer is present, they can pretty much pick a sector, but at regular intervals, check *all* sectors, I guess in case the juniors miss something.
I've staffed my bridge at times with only 3 crew, 2 POs and the 1WO. I don't know if it changes the detection abilities or range, or if ships can sneak up on you with less crew on duty.

Yes but what I am understanding from Black May is the watch officer just took a 90 degree sector himself plus the 3 others makes 4 total (when the captain didn't want to visit of coarse)

I've found the same problem, especially the bloke on the right who is always blocking vision..... but if you go to the crew mode view and remove the seamen starting from the left (usually the one, but you can move up to three) that bloke will be gone in your bridge view.
However this has to be done everytime you surface! Regards to all Marksie |
