Default Star Trek - Horizon

Today marks the release of the official trailer for 'Star Trek - Horizon'.

This is a project I've built a couple of props for and have backed as an Associate Producer by way of the Kickstarter. I'm really happy to see this progress nicely.

Likewise, looks very promising, nice to see someone picking up on the Romulan war that ENT alluded to.

EDIT: Although...I do wonder how they're going to deal with humans knowing what Romulans look like...in 'Balance of Terror' it's a surprise to the crew of the Enterprise that the Romulans look like Vulcans. Perhaps the information is classified by Starfleet and the appearance of T'mar is also classified.

Fingers crossed for this but one question...How can a fire burn in outer space?

Oxygen from the ship...at least that's one explanation I've heard of it, that the ship is venting oxygen as well as the fire...not exactly sure of the hard science of it...but then again we're hearing phaser fire, explosions and the movements of ships in a vacuum so there's that...

It's nice to see a return to the Navy experimental model of starship and the early days of FTL travel, pre- UFP.

Consider it to be plasma, and you are in the comfort zone again.

Sorry to always rant about ST.. but.. I still dont get it. I'm on season 5 of TNG, and while I've heard it gets better after season 2.. it's still mostly just soap opera.

I mean, the intro says that Enterprise's mission is to seek alien worlds and so on.. why are they hosting conventions and such then? Shouldn't they be faaaar away from all that stuff and you know.. poke around finding different races and cultures?

Also, Picard must be the most reckless starship commander EVER. He puts the lives of everyone onboard to risk all the damn time!

"Oooh! An alien lifeform, let's go closer!"
"Captain, we are picking up an electric charge. Raise shields?"
"Naaaaah"
"Captain, it's draining our power!"
"Ok, shields then.."
"Nope, they don't work anymore, you idiot."
"*Sigh* Shoot it then."
*Kills the alien*
"Awww.. what have we done..."

(based on an actual episode)

Star Trek always seemed to struggle to find its place between the utopia that Roddenbery imagined, and the gritty sci-fi that became popular in the late 1990s, early 2000s. You can see the change in Deep Space Nine when the Dominion get introduced.

Haven't gotten to DSN yet, but I can kinda see what you mean. At times, TNG is serious, but then in other episodes it just goes silly. Overall, I think the problem with ST I have so far is the lack of consistency. Things established in earlier episodes are broken just to fit some other episode.

There was one episode early in TNG where, I think it was Riker got killed, but he was beamed to the medlab in about 30 seconds and he got revived. That was explained by saying that if the patient got there in time and had no extreme injuries, the patient could be revived.

Ok, few episodes later, a woman dies, he is beamed almost instantly to the medlab. What does the doctor do? Check her pulse the old fashioned way and says she's dead. No "extreme" injuries, she didn't even use her fancy scanner! Just to make a plot for that episode (another soap opera BS) That is just lazy if you ask me.

See, I don't dislike ST "just because". I dislike what I have seen so far because it makes so little sense and there are so many other, better Sci-fi. Take the original Battlestar Galactica: Acting was better, things made sense, it didn't "bend the rules" to make a plot fit.

I DID enjoy TOS, it was good in the camp way. I mean, it was completely silly, but enjoyable.

I shall report back when I see more of ST. Over and out.

The problem is viewers in general get bored with utopia episodes and look for something that brews trouble and drives plots, ergo the Dominion War for DS9 and Voyager, the Borg threat for TNG, and the Temporal War for Enterprise.
