To be fair that is on par with that survivalist/prepper/conspiracy theorist/buy gold now website you keep linking to, it's just from the other end of the spectrum.

2012 rifles were used to murder more than 320 people.
Thats just shy of the number of adults who died of head related injuries from bicycle crashes. 320 people out of 316 MILLION. Not sure if you can even count that as a statistic. Ban bicycles!! |

It's just a tool...
Like those foos at Rolling Stone.
Guns don't kill people. People kill people. If there were no guns, they'd just choose a different tool. Knife, crow bar, tire iron, machete or a hammer. If anyone is afraid of getting shot or think they're allergic to lead, better invest in a Kevlar vest, wear it daily and hope they don't shoot you in your concussion zone. Now days, you're more likely to get shot, tazed or pepper sprayed by a trigger happy cop, rather than some miscreant. If you're scared of shuffling off the ol' mortal coil, you might want to take a closer look at your lifestyle and adjust accordingly. ![]()

I beg to differ. On September 10, 1861, the Union gunboats Conestoga and Lexington, operating from Island #2 to Lucas Bend, Kentucky, were fired on by Confederate troops. Conestoga returned fire with 8" cannister. An 8" gun is technically a 64-pounder.

How not to "see the elephant" ca 1863
Absolutely correct! I was referring more to the common battlefield aspects of the senseless carnage more than focusing on the actual size of the nonstandard field artillery. Of similar interest would be of one the most famous Parrott rifles: the Swamp Angel, an 8-inch (200 mm) gun used by federals to bombard Charleston SC.
![]() Two gunboats: USS Lexington and Tyler saved Grant's surprised backside in the terrible slaughter of Shiloh and stymied the Confederate attack, giving Grant time to organize and counter-attack the following day. USS Lexington, armed with four 8" Dahlgrens and two 32 pounder smoothbores and the side wheeler Tyler with 6 8" guns and one 32 pounder fired throughout the long night both shells and "stands of cannister'. They served well at Ft. Donelson, Belmont and other river battles of the Western Theater often exchanging fire with infantry units ( direct fire as opposed to shell indirect fire)- but none so critically as at Shiloh. Walking Pickett's charge style into canister double-shotted ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]()
