Default Finding Carrier

Ahoi!

1st post

June 25 1942

Coming from Pearl Harbour, refuelling at Midway. Witnessing an air raid! Following enemy planes NNW. I followed their trail 3 days. Loosing them over night and always found them again in the morning (problem here: is the plane coming FROM the carrier or is it on its way back)

Question: is it possible to find the carriers (the in game war report stated that the enemy lost 4 carriers during the battle of Midway) or do the planes spawn without a carrier?

Question: how far away from target did the japanese carriers launched their air raids? The normal Zero had a range of 3100 km.

Depends on mods. As I recall the stock game did a poor job placing the correct planes stemming from the correct platforms, but a mod like RSRD corrects it.

The plane traffic from carriers basically spawns itself like an airbase, but this is just general roaming traffic. For most battles, plane traffic is spawned separately like any group in the game. If done properly plane groups are spawned near carrier groups and should only be carrier type planes. This is your clue, try to ID the planes and see if they're carrier type planes. If they are, should be a carrier group within proper range.

Problem with stock many times it leaves out carrier groups, but may spawn some carrier plane attacks, you won't have that problem with RSRD mod.

Give you an example. I'm sitting in the strait above Timor waiting for the Jap carrier group to make it's run into the Indian Ocean in Feb. of 42. Eventually I start seeing some plane traffic, singles or pairs. I know these are standard patrols. I ID the planes and they're carrier base planes, so I know a carrier is near and these are mot likely spawned from the carrier. Later, a large group of planes comes over,...I know these are spawned separate to be the historical attack. The next day the carrier group arrives and I give battle.

So basically think of a carrier as a standard airbase in game, works the same and will spawn traffic based on values, usually patrols, never mass air attacks. However, carriers will spawn mass attacks if they see targets, such as you. Can be silly, but they can spawn many groups just to attack you.

Now a mod like RSRD will not only spawn planes near the carriers, but they take the proper route to battle, then return near the carriers and despawn. Stock they often despawn anywhere.

A trick that helps some...the first patrol group you spot, mark that spot. You'll notice patrols come and go, but usually the first direction they come from is the right direction. As you have more patrols pop up, mark each spot, that can give you a general direction the ship group is going.

Course, I don't remember stock traffic well, but sure the carriers are at Midway, but seems they spawn and despawn in the area of battle, whereas with RSRD they spawn and despawn at a Jap port.

Bonjour,

June 25, 1942, the Battle of Midway is over for almost a month and the Japanese fleet returned to the fold, except for diversionary operations in the Aleutian Islands. Then no Japanese aircraft carrier does move before August 1942 for the Battle of the Eastern Solomons.
Not having information on your location, we can assume that you have met is either an air patrol is an isolated aircraft carrier implemented randomly in the game "to furnish."

But in my opinion, you should be far enough from Midway because, to my knowledge, in the game, no Japanese aircraft carriers are approaching so near a U.S. base after June, 1942.

Good hunting.

Well on my second attempt to find the carriers I followed the traces of the planes NNW until sundown.

By luck I managed to make contact to the battle group at eleven p.m. during a horrible storm. I used the bad conditions to place my ship in the center of the group undetected. I just drove at flank speed surfaced!!
At 00:50 a.m. I indetified the carrier Shokaku at a distance of 1100 meters and immediately start to launch four torpedos on her.

At 00:54 the Shokaku sank after three hits.

During the next 24 hours I was not able to maneuver my ship into a position to launch another attack, because the group was travelling at 17 knots.

So I decided to break off and travel to my patrol area at the coast of south Japan. Half way there I stumpled over another enemy wargroup two hours before midnight. I identified two Hiryu, two Shokagu, two Mogami and two modern tankers. There were also a few destroyers present and probably one or two additional small carriers.

I managed to maneuver into a good position undetected and sank one Hiryu and one Shokagu.

I was suprised that japan had this much carriers.

All this before I even reached my patrol area.

I played IL-2 Sturmovik a lot and can say that SH4 is as entertaining and demanding as the old WW2 planes were :-)
