Default To Sink or Not To Sink

Have you ever gotten a solid hydrophone contact, shadowed the ship underwater, determined its course and speed, went roaring out to 7,000 meters and far ahead, sneaked up on the bugger underwater without going scope up, and set up the perfect killing shot, before raising the scope to see... an 89 ton fishing boat?! Verdammt Herr Creutz can't you hear the difference between a C3 cargo ship and a fishing boat?!

Well, what now? Do you figure you've come this far so screw it that baby's going down? Or do you refuse to waste your ammo on anything under 1900 tons?

It only takes a hit or two from the deck gun to sink them so it's not really a waste of ammo. Then again my philosophy is "Tonnage is Tonnage".

I would consider a torpedo to be a waste on a target that small, but that is what the deck gun is for. You can even man the AA gun and sink them if you like. That's fun.

The AA gun can sink them? Finally it actually has a use.

Surely a torp will be a waste for that, but the fun of seeing the small boat vaporizing is priceless

I have been in that situation for a couple of times already, it's really frustrating after a long and exhausting approach especially in heavy fog and rain when all you can use is the hydrophone. I myself wouldn't bother to attack such a tiny fishing boat, after all they're just fishermen who wouldn't hurt a fly. On the other hand, that ridiculously low amount of tonnage of a fishing boat isn't worth giving away your presence in the area at all. At least, that's the way I see it.

I've done that a couple times in SH4 with the sampans. Those things can fly when hit with a torp.

Ahhh sampans. I remember them best from SH I. Those were the times where you could aim the deck gun on a bunch of pixels pretending to be a boat. Those were fun kills back then

Oh yes, they can. In fact, I use the large AA gun on my Type IX as a backup to my deck gun when I run out of ammo.

Early in the war if I can wipe out a convoy's escorts and the rest of the ships have no guns, I can and have wiped out every ship in the convoy using every scrap of ammo on the boat, including the AA guns.

Steve's right; Heck of a way to brighten a patrol up.

I recall reading on Uboat.net about a U-boat that sank a sailing vessel (under 100 tons) by deck gun. Well, it was carrying cargo: coconuts, copra, some guns & ammo. Must've been a slow day in the Caribbean.

Hello everyone...

I had a new tactic...i personaly i dont like to haste any kind of ammo, my tactic its to ram the fishing boat or another kind of small target at flank speed...
