Default Well, It's Out

Those of you who have followed my misadventures in music for the past decade know that I joined a band in December 1992. 'Carpe Diem' was a '60s-'80s cover band. Since the female singer's first name was Marey, the name changed to 'Proud Mary'. With the addition of more and more originals we changed the name again to 'Cast of Characters'. In 1996 the band broke up, mainly due to life choices.

In 2003 Charles Cochran recruited former band members to help with a couple of projects involving his rising talent as a songwriter. In 2006 he convinced us to get back together under the name 'Monkey Rum'. By this time he had been through enough time and enough different drummers that he had raised his own - his son Chris. Unfortunately Chris's personal problems and my homelessness ended the project before it ever got started.

In 2009 we tried again, with well-know results.

We played several gigs that year, but again problems stopped us short. Chris had to drop out. We got a new drummer, Ted, and we tried again.

We then started playing regular acoustic gigs.

In 2010 we went into a studio to record some stuff. More than one thousand dollars later and some bad feelings we let it die. After that Ted left the band and Chris came back.

In October 2011 we got together with a very old friend and former bandmate of mine, Kelly Brown, and started yet another project.

As can be seen in the end of that thread, nine months later I was starting to become unhappy with not ever actually playing, and with not playing more of my own songs. Ultimately this led to a parting of the ways. Since then I've been looking at different options, playing the blues jam every week and having a good, if not very profitable, time. Monkey Rum was joined by Clay's old friend Brian, and they've played a few sets since then, but still not more than one every three months or so. Brian fit right in and joined them with the studio project.

And now, the reason for this thread - Banished From the Garden is finally out! Though I'm no longer with the band, the bass playing on this album is all mine, as well as much of the harmony singing. It's only representative of one phase of Charles's writing and the bands capabilities. I once described our repetoire as 'Folk-Rock-Country-Metal-Blues', and from some of the earlier videos you can see that it's true.

Current member or not, I'm proud of my work on this project, and I wish them the best. I don't see a place to order the disc yet, but the MP3 download is available on Amazon and CD Baby. The second site costs more but has a better set of samples for you to listen to for a taste of what we could do.

I hope you enjoy it. I sure did.

Unless Van Halen suddenly delurks as a sub simmer, it certainly qualifies you as this forum's sole Rock Star. Congratulations!

Thanks, but I think Skwasjer might disagree.

Great stuff, from the samples I particularly like track one, but with a more thorough listen that may change.

I'll ask the obvious question - who's the girl on the cover.

No idea, but in keeping with the cover motif, I posted on MR's Facebook page that I thought she was "quite tempting".

Hi Steve what basses did you have.

I played in local bands form 66 to 82.

Guitar, Bass, Keyboards,

Had an early second hand Rickenbacker

Gibson Ripper

Rickenbacker Stereo

Always fancied trying a Gibson EB3

That album was played with a Peavey Grind 6-string, running through a DigiTech BP-200 processor, then straight into the recording board. I also have a cheap Rogue fretless bass, which is what I use at the blues jams.
