Started making my own nautical maps.
I wanted to get some better maps of the contours of the oceans, depth maps specifically. Can't find anything of good quality online without being limited to small size. So I decided to start making maps for operational areas.
The work will be slow but I plan to knock out a few dozen. Actual maps... Let me know what you think. Feel free to use. Last edited by Jaystew; 05-13-14 at 10:23 PM. |

CHARTS! They're nautical charts!
Thank you. Now that I have that out of my system I feel much better. Oh, and that one is lovely. I can't wait to see more.

a little help from a cartography nut
This should help if you haven't discovered it on your own; Just finished reading the Great Cartographers - a useful tome in your endeavors! http://www.kartengruppe.it/index.php/nordmeer-deutsche-admiralitatskarten Good work!awaiting great results! The one of San Francisco Bay (4' x 5') hangs on my mancave wall and is in my GPS Sailor IPOD which hangs in the gangway hatch when at sea-keeps the positional mapping paperwork down! Now if I can brain out the tacking on my new auto steerer to it, I can open a Hamm's!??

Thanks for the positive feedback. I have been looking online for the actual charts they used, with depths. Alot of the materials online are blurry or non-existent. There are also terribly incomplete.
Was hoping we'd get more detail on the ingame map but oh well. The biggest thing I think that is missing is the depth contours. Where is that 100m and 200m line. The all important line of survival where the water gets deep enough to survive depth charged right? So finally decided to make my own and then sort of standardize the format of them. If you liked that last one I think you'll love the next one coming. Thanks much. |

I like that site. I just cant see anything on those maps. The quality of the images is too poor. You can't make out any depths at all. Major features yes, navigable features no.

Read me a single depth off that chart. Maybe I need my eyes tested. Last time around I was better than 20x20. It might be possible to make that chart large enough and then sharpen it but I dont think so.
See this as an example of what I'm making. http://i.imgur.com/w3N2DQZ.jpg I find it easier to read. |

Apologies Thought you were interested in the contour lines only and would imput depths as you liked. Actually in the movie Master and Commander, the captain uses a loupe to look at the chart details and I am using a 5" glass lens on a flex stand to examine my post map; The way to go here IMHO would be to determine what commercial 'chandleries' are operating in areas you wish to map. In CA that is West Coast and they sell totally detailed charts on the heavy paper for around $13.00, as with my exceedingly detailed San Francisco Bay Entrance chart. These are becoming collectable as the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is ceasing as technology (IPODS) take over. A search of English and perhaps German boat supply stores would surely carry the same product. Keep up the great cartography! At least when you do 'operation drumbeat' you'll have no problems with the East coast! http://www.charts.noaa.gov/OnLineViewer/AtlanticCoastViewerTable.shtml < Charleston Harbor similar to my SF Bay chart!

Yeah the NOAA ones are great. But they only cover the USA areas, and the other problem is there is no way to declutter them. Plus they have loads of modern data. So while detailed and great for their purpose I have ruled them out as a real source for WW2 cartography.
