Default GWX3 GOLD, Real or Imagined?

Hi,

I have SH3 v1.4b and I installed GWX3 GOLD and SH3 Commander on my PC.

I have played a few patrols and things didn't go well. And I am starting over.
I just read the GWX manual, or at least the first 100 pagers or so and I don't think I am even using GWX in the game! I read where I should have started with 1500 renown and I only have 500 at the start. And most displays, but not all, look like stock SH3 so I am confused as to whether or not I am even getting the benefits of GWX.

After installing the downloads I have four new ICONS on the desktop, GWX3 Manual, JSGME, Silent Hunter with GWX 3.0 and SH3 Commander.
I read that I am suppose to use the SH3 Commander ICON to launch the game, which I do.

Am I missing a step? I haven't even used the remaining ICONS at all( I accessed the Manual directly from the folder). There are so many warnings in the manual associated with GWX and Commander that I am afraid to experiment with anything.

Any push in the right direction would be appreciated. I'm 65 years old so please have a little mercy on me. I searched for some answers already but nothing is clear.

Thanks,

Larry

I know GWX 3 will only install to a proper SH3 install location.
I wrote the installer.

The only way it will do any different is if you have the key to the back door.
Which only 3 people in the whole World have!

1) Install stock sh3. Do you have sh3 as CD/DVD or from steam?

2) GWX: Pay attention to the installation path! You have to install GWX into your SH3 folder but the path first given by the installation program isn't automatically always the correct one. That is especially true when using the Steam version of SH3!!

Download GWX: (I suggest to get a torrent program like utorrent for the torrent download (it's usually faster), right side of the link !!)

http://www.thegreywolves.com/downloads/

3a) Install sh3 commander V3.2:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=2923

3b) After that install the offical sh3 cmd fix for GWX:

GWX3_SH3Commandercfg (right side of gwx downloads)

http://www.thegreywolves.com/downloads/

4) Get the newest version of JSGME from subsim/downloads! This program is there to easily manage your mods!

NOTE: GWX will automatically install an older version of JSGME with the GWX mod!

After you got the newer version of JSGME you unzip the content and copy all of it into your sh3 folder and over the older JSGME files.

(JSGME also comes with a readme file for further instructions! GWX manual page 23 "GWX OPTIONS")

My sincere thanks!!

I have the original SH3 disk but it is on a different pc so I bought the Steam version for this one.

Fortunately I had most of it correct. I had to do the SH3 Commander fix and replace the JSGME app with latest version.

I still can't quite get my arms around how all of this fits together:

1- Do I EVER click on the ICON labeled Silent Hunter for GWX? IF not why is it there?

2- Because the instructions say to ALWAYS start the game from the SH3 Commander ICON.

3- As a test I quickly created a profile in Commander and launched SH3 but my renown is still at 500 instead of the 1500 mentioned in the instructions.

4- I haven't done anything with the JSGME ICON yet except to note that there are about 20 preloaded MODS in it. Do I need one of those to get an increase in renown.?

5- And actually the amount of renown is not really the issue. I just want to be able to determine if GWX3 GOLD is actually making a noticeable and improved different on it's own or is it strictly driven by mods that I must locate and install via JSGME?

GWX and SH3 Commander are separate programs. The GWX icon is there because it installs with GWX. If you want you can always start with the GWX icon, but Commander will be ignored. If you want to use Commander you have to start with the Commander icon. Commander will set up its files and then start SH3/GWX for you.

I hope my previous comment explained it adequately. If not just say so. Between us we'll get you straightened out.

To gain the 1500 renown you have to complete the Training Academy missions, at least in stock SH3. With GWX the missions are harder, but you only have to complete the first Navigation Course, which is very easy. The best news is that you only have to do this once, and from then on every new career will automatically have the extra renown.

No. The only thing you need to do is complete the first Training Mission.

GWX all by itself will make a vast difference from the stock game. The extra mods are different improvements that you can try. Some players enjoy one and some enjoy others. They're there for you to try if you want. JSGME makes it easy to remove them again if you don't want them.

So you have two things to keep in mind:

1) Steam SHIII intallation path is different from the "default" installation path of the original distribution of the game.

2) You have to check and give write permissions to third party software over your SHIII STEAM installation folder.

For point 2) there is a thread in this forum with specific, step-by-step instructions, but I so not have a link for you (I cannot remeber nor recover the address of that thread, I'm still a newbie on this forum). Maybe a veteran here could point you in the right direction

there's a youtube channel which offers several tutorial videos regarding installing sh3, gwx and among other things also that steam folder permission thing!

I'm really NOT 100% sure here but I believe this problem only occurs when your are NOT the administrator of your copy of windows? I at least never had to do this permission fix...

Welcome aboard, youngster! I was your age once. In a few years, you'll get the hang of this stuff!

Seriously, the posters above have all given you good advice and direction. I'd like to add some more general advice:

First, relax! No matter what you do, you can't mess things up past the point of recovery. At the worst, you will have to go back, remove what you have done, and reinstall everything. That's no fun - it's time-consuming and frustrating - but it's manageable. The only way to break your computer is to drop in on the floor. So don't let it get to you.

Second, the most complicated software install is really just a bunch of simple steps. Maybe a LOT of simple steps, but each one is actually straightforward. There is nothing special about the brain of a 14-year-old boy that your mature mind lacks. You have experience, time, and patience. You can do this!

Finally, practice this simple procedure: 1) Read the documentation. 2) Repeat step one. Not everything is explained in the documentation. Not all the documentation is easy to understand. But the guy who wrote it was trying to be helpful and usually knew what he was writing about. Let him help.

Good luck! Please continue to share your progress. People around here like to help.

Mmm... not sure at all about that!
And I say this as a 35-year-old-boy myself! I can actually feel (or should I say, suffer?) the difference!!

Now I agree: here we are speaking of the positive benefits of a mature brain, I can confirm them by err... experience (no pun intended)

Oh, I'm pretty sure. (I used to teach computer skills to teenagers - and adults.) Unless you think that having a brain immressed in a vat of seething hormones improves analytical thinking!

My thanks to Sailor Steve and all the others who took the time to reply. Because of you guys I am beginning to get a grasp on this.

So, if I start from SH3 Commander I get the benefits of JGSME mods, Commander and GWX3 GOLD, but if I start from just GWX3 I do not get the modifications included in Commander, only JGSME and GWX. Is that correct?.

And I do understand permissions and directories etc and at the start of all this I did make sure the pertinent installs went to the correct folder in Steam.

I didn't mean to mislead anyone on my experience. I have had computers since the Commodore 64 and Atari 800XL days. I still have those devices in the boxes they came in. I save everything. I remember buying Harpoon when I stumbled upon it in a R/C hobby shop in Sacramento. The only other place to get software was Egghead. I have purchased hundreds of games and every sub sim , flight sim and war game I could find over the years. There was a time when if you wanted a software war game war Avalon Hill had a lock on it. But they blew it.

So today I will read more documentation and study up on the mods.

By the way, Steve I noticed the Gulf Of Tonkin Yacht Club patch you have. I was a member myself. Two Westpac Cruises one six months and another 9 months. I was a Radioman on the USS Long Beach CGN-9 from January 1969 to December 1972.

Essentially that is correct, but I don't usually refer to JSGME as an "only". JSGME works with any game in any configuration, and in fact was not originally designed for the Silent Hunter series at all. Its function is strictly to give you better control over the mods, allowing you to not only enable them but also disable them with ease.

But basically yes, Commander only works if you start the game through Commander. Everything else is separate.

Your a better man than I am. I was an apprentice Radioman (never actually got the patch) on USS Brinkley Bass (DD-887) from March to December 1970, and was on station from the time I joined the ship in March until we came home in June. That three months has so many stories that it felt more like three years.

Here's the weird part. Were you in Subic during that three months? I ask because I have some pictures I've never put on my computer of our ship being moved away from the pier to make room for one of the Guided Missile Cruisers, and I think it was the Long Beach. I already found out a few years ago that when we did maneuvers with an Australian task force Tarjak's dad was one of the Aussie sailors in the group. The world seems to keep getting smaller.

It may be getting smaller BUT, I'd hate to have to paint it.

Subic was a home away from home for us. Olongapo and the Jeepnys will be forever imprinted in my mind.

I really liked Number 6 at the Silver Star Club. I still have her tag....

Anyway, I would like to see the pics if that is what you are offering. I was sort of the unofficial photographer and I took hundreds of photo's during the 4 years I was in. I often wish there had been video camera during that time. I almost bought one that used the one inch tape and the player for $2000. It was in the Exchange catalog. I still have that catalog.

Here's one I posted in the 'Favorite Naval Photos' thread.

And another.

And another.

I now find that I have a bunch of photos that I've never scanned in. When I do I'll post them in that thread.
