Giving Rumsfeld a run for his money

Before there was Donald Rumsfeld with his -

Reports that say that something hasn't happened are always interesting to me, because as we know, there are known knowns; there are things we know that we know. There are known unknowns; that is to say, there are things that we now know we don't know. But there are also unknown unknowns – there are things we do not know we don't know.

- we, in Britain, had our very own Sir Humphrey Appleby*, Cabinet Secretary, with this little speech -

(Background, the PM wants to abolish orders for Trident and cruise missiles, instead keeping a useless Polaris whilst Sir Humphrey argues about the probability of the Russians knowing if the button would be pushed. Or not.)



I often forget how good these series are but started from the beginning, again, a few weeks ago. Brilliant scripts, brilliant acting, brilliant British comedy.


*just acting, I'm sure the real things are just as good.

He was. It's amazing how many issues they cover that are still around today - the latest I've just watched was about a smoking ban in public places, large warnings and no advertising of cigarettes, and tobacco sponsoring of sports. Nearly 30 years ago.

Also in the same episode was about the Navy having only four capital ships so in theory they only needed four admirals and an admiral of the fleet.

'How many admirals do we have?'

'60.'

You think that politicians of today (and every day) should be made to watch this stuff!

That depends on where you get your figures from, I've seen the number of Admirals qouted at 41 and vessels at 40 but I've seen the number of vessels as high as 79
