After a reinstall of my OP system I reinstalled my copy of SH3, and after trying to enter the patch SH3_DVD_1.4b_emea I got a message saying that the patch could not be added as the game identity was unrecognised. My original SH3 dvd was thrown away with a broken DVD tray, I got this latest copy from Amazon and it is called Revival? although I sure that all the patches etc were installed the last time I loaded it onto the PC.
As I could only add 4 mods anyway to the JSGME due to always getting messages that the mod I wanted was already overwritten (whatever that means) so I have decided to buy another copy of SH, hopefully genuine one.
Now for this I need some advice before I jump, because coming back to the site after quite some time I see that there is now a SH5 although it looks like some people don't rate it.
Unfortunately I don't know what mods work with which game best and I would like some help in finding a good game and mod combination.
With my last SH3 game I had 4 mods including the convoy mod which made the game much more interesting now I see a GWX and a LSH mod, so can anyone explain what is the difference between the two and which would be best when I get another SH3 dvd, or could I use them both?
Thanks Robert.

one thing to note about JGSME is that you will often get warnings about overwriting files and in many cases this is normal and ok, and not necessarily a problem. You just have to know which mods you want and that the mods that come later in the order will be the ones you will be using in the case of an overwrite warning. You can have many many mods in JGSME dozens in fact.

GWX is a good option because they have automated the process and when you open JGSME you will see additional mods available that have been tested to work with GWX, so its a fool proof setup with great game play...as you explore the world of mods more you can decide what additional mods, if any you would like to use. One thing I highly recommend is to get the 4gb patch which will allow more memory to be dedicated to SH3..just do a search on here and you will find it

Any copy released 2008 or later is already fully patched. That is why the patch couldn't recognize it. You almost certainly do NOT need to buy another copy.

Many different mods alter the same files. If you don't use JSGME you run the danger of overwriting previous mods and never knowing why it's not working. JSGME is smart enough to tell you when you're about to overwrite (cover up) another mod you installed with JSGME. It also tells you exactly which file is going to be overwritten, so you can decide which version of that file is more important to you. It also tells you if it's something as simple as a text file, so you can combine the two and have both working.

Load up your current SH3 copy and start the game. On the loading screen it should say which version it is. If it's 1.4 then you'll be wasting your money if you buy another copy.

Pretty much every mod made for SH3 works with it. The question is whether that mod works well with other mods. That's what JSGME is for. This list was made for GWX, but many of these work just fine with any supermod.

There are currently four supermods for SH3:

NYGM (Not Your Grandmother's Mod): Is the most in-depth gameplay supermod. It's oriented toward accurate Enemy AI and is very tough to play. It's also has a host of devoted fans.

LSH3 (Living Silent Hunter 3): Oriented more toward feel an immersion. Lots of cool graphics stuff.

WAC (War Ace Campaign): Great attention to the details of who went where throughout the war. Gives you the chance to take part in major wartime events, with careful attention to detail.

GWX (Grey Wolves eXpanded): A combination of the two concepts, with very good gameplay and also great graphics. Easily the most popular of the SH3 supermods. GWX ended some time ago, but former members have gone out of their way to keep expanding it, with many new graphics details taken from LSH3 (with permission, of course).

While you can't combine supermods without a whole lot of work, MultiSH3 lets you have multiple copies of SH3 on your computer at the same time, so you can try them all out.

There is also CCoM 10 (Commanders Choice of Mods) that is similar to LSH 3.

A new version of LSH 3 is tentatively set for release in December, the last I heard.

Thanks for your help and advice chaps, although I can't find what version of SH I have I think it will be after 2008.
I put back JSGME last night and found a few Mods in a folder, now I think the GWX mod will be interesting, and I presume it will be somewhere on the site, again my thanks.

Hi again
I have found the GWX mod but my system will not let me put it in the MOD's folder which is in C : Program Files.Silent Hunter. Mods, it is tellimg me that "I do not have permission to save to this location" and Do you want to save to the Robert folder instead?
If I do, can I slide the mod into the JSGME from the Robert folder, and if that works should the GWX mod be installed before my favourite mod of extra ammo, and the other three mods I usually use?
Regards Robert.

GWX comes with its own installer. It cannot be activated with JSGME. Put it on your desktop and double-click the file. It will prompt you with the necessary steps, and then install itself. It is highly recommended that GWX only be installed to a fresh, unused version of SH3, otherwise there can be configuration problems.

And be sure to read the screens while installing!
You will need to direct the install to the proper folder as it was written before Windows 7 and there are problems if you don't!

(And you may need to turn your speakers up real high )

Hi, I put the file on the DeskTop and it installed itself into the 7-Zip folder but there was no file called GWX inside, so I clicked on the desk top file again and sent it to the SH3 folder, same again, no GWX file.
Each time I click onto the GWX3.0 Config files for SH3 it says "Choose which folder to instal 7-Zip Beta" I think there is something mixed up here I am on limited time tonight but I'll try to D-Load it again to the DT

The GWX files are multi files and you need all of them.
(Unless you got the single install version)
You may have the SH3 Commander file.

Hi , Yes I got them from the "Most Popular Files" and I think they are Cmdr files, but when I go to where I put them all I see is 7-Zip and when I open the 7Zip folder there is nothing in there with RWX or install just a load of Z's files.
Are you saying that there are others which I can d/load individually? Robert.

Yes. Here's a link to jimbuna's downloads.
http://www.gamefront.com/files/user/JimbunaGWX3.0

You need to download the 7 bin files plus the exe file.
Place them all in the same folder and run the exe.

Thanks for that info privateer, I did eventually download the 7 files and the exe but it took forever to get them to d,load as I had to click the d,load button for about 5 mins before I got the "If your d,load does not start click here" now I have them unfortunately I am still unable to install them as when I click on the exe file it goes as far as the install box and then I get a message that "setup needs the next disk" I have tried moving the folder I made to contain the files from place to place without success as I always get the message that the files cannot be found in the folder in which I have placed them, and browsed to.
I didn't think it would be this hard to install a few files I wonder if I will have better luck if I try the LSH.

Sounds like you have a file that came down corrupted.
You can check the MD5 of the files to see which is bad.

Many thanks, I have installed the MD5, but what does it do? are the files which you have kindly attached to post into the grey md5 box in some way, there seems to be one slot greyed out and one white one.
I have tried to download the 7 bin files again but the file download will still not start, so I'll have another play with it in the morning, Regards Robert.
