The needle in the eye was not an uncommon experiment. There is a very good book titled:
"The Last Man Who Knew Everything: Thomas Young, the Anonymous Polymath Who Proved Newton Wrong, Explained How We See, Cured the Sick and Deciphered the Rosetta Stone" by Andrew Robinson about the life of Thomar Young who was not adverse to experimenting on himself. Young's breadth and depth of knowledge is astonishing and the book is well worth the read... <O>
