Default Making a Quadrant Calculator

Some of you might remember the KTBs I made. Well part of keeping a real war diary is plotting a 4-figure KM grid - AM5217 rather than AM52 which is marked on the game. Usually I look at the map, get a ruler out, and work out where I am on the screen to get my position.

I could do this by measuring the entire grid and dividing it into 9x9 squares. So, if the grid is 9cm long along the x axis, and my sub is, say, 1.5cm along, I know it's in the second column of squares. Do it for the y axis and you have your position. Make sense? No? Okay...

  • Here you can see, I've measured the size of a grid square at a specified zoom level.
  • Then I've cut that shape out of an index card.
  • The whole thing gets put through a laminator.
  • Then a 9x9 grid is drawn on, and the numbers filled in.
  • Be aware that there are different sized grids in different areas of the map! I did this twice.

So I can read off my current position (pretty accurately, but not perfectly) as BF5818!

Thanks for this. This is a fast and accurate enough way of keeping track of the grid

For those players who want to do some SH3 editing, Tycho has made an excellent in-game version. You can download it from here:

http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/down...o=file&id=4196

My Charts addon mod from version 1.4 onwards also has Tycho's grid scheme. Charts addon is JSGME compatible if and only if you use a combination of GWX+MaGuiF or NYGM+MaGui F - and don't add any other mods that change menu_1024_768.ini file.

With your laminator solution and Tycho's grid scheme there really is no need to guesstimate grids anymore

And yeah I believe many of us remember your KTB's. Do keep them coming if you have time to play the game!

Thanks sublynx! And great shout on the electronic version, that seems like it would be much more convenient for most people. I like to do stuff 'out the game' if possible, so navigation, stopwatch etc all done IRL but this is so easy to use.

Glad you enjoyed them, I took a bit of a hiatus (it did make the game very long) but just started a new patrol yesterday, so hopefully will have that up soon.

That's great to hear

I feel that writing a KTB while playing adds to the game, as writing makes one think more about how and why am I going to do things in the game.
