Default Whats up with the laser guided torpedoes?

Just bought the game. I noticed that after firing the torpedo, it changes course. I wasnt aware that WWII era torpedos had laser guidance. I looked up the model of the torpedo and it doesnt mention any guidance systems. What is up with this? I have difficulty set at realistic.

It runs straight forward for a couple of meters, then finds it course using gyro's and the stuff you fed it... other then that, they don't .. unless you play with certain torpedo mods, that make strays possible ... or circle runners

Part of the torpedo angle calculations involves Gyro Angle. If the boat is not perfectly lined up and the torpedo fired at the perfect time it will miss. The solution to this involves setting the gyro angle. Calculations are made and entered into the Torpedo Data Computer. The torpedo will then turn soon after leaving the tube to assume the correct angle of approach to the target. This doesn't mean that it will necessarily hit, and it is not guided. It just turns the way it needs to go to get to the target.

Are you aware of the Pattern Running Torpedoes, which run back and forth until they encounter something? The Acoustic Homing Torpedoes, which lock onto the noise the ship makes and then hunts it down?

Does it include information on Gyro Angle? That's part of the solution, along with Range, Speed and Angle On the Bow.

ok cool i'd love to learn about all this stuff. And yea I have heard of those types of torpedoes (minus the pattern running ones) Im a WWII fanatic but i mostly have focused on the land aspect of the war

Is there a good guide for this game somewhere that could serve as a tutorial. The game teaches you nothing at all.

look into the sh4 forums and read the info there about manual targeting and strategy and evasion tactics, rockin robbins has some good ones.

look at these: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=146795

one thing to remember is sh3, sh4, & sh5 are different games but for the most part the things you do are the same so tips, tricks, and lessons from all should be looked over to make you better at whichever game you play the most and if you don't have the others do yourself a favor and buy them and download all the mods you can find for them to save in your files. over time some great mods have been lost because no one bothered to think ahead and save them so they can be around in the future.
