From what I've seen and heard RR would be ideally armed in his intellectual quiver to address this, but its probably so basic that many others could answer it too.

I can install games & whatnot & whatever on my machine no problem, use it completely to my heart's content, but every now and then (once every 6 months or so) it will refuse me permission to do something because I'm not Admin. Case in point, typing over the 'Skywalker' name in the SHIV files and trying to replace it with 'Sullivan'.

I am the only user on my computer. How could it not think I am Admin?

You still have to give yourself administrator privileges though - i agree RR is probably the best to answer this - certainly better than me...

Question #1: are you using Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8? Any of those operating systems, in agreement with just about every distribution of Linux and Apple OSs, believe that they have a duty to protect certain special files by requiring admin privileges.

Windows likes to protect system files, mostly in the /Windows directory and program files in either the /Program Files or /Program Files (x86) directories. Unless you are logged in as an administrator, you cannot change these files. Believe it or not, I agree with the situation and it's about time that Windows caught up.

Why in the world would I agree with limiting your use of your machine. YOUR MACHINE!!! Ahem.... I feel much better now. Well, it's because there are bad guys out there who do occasionally hack into machines. And there is bad malware (there's a saying: bad malware! As if there were good malware... you have to consider the source here.

) out there that love to hack into your machine. Without administrator access their potential damage is limited.

Same goes for you. You are by default a garden variety user without adminstrator privileges. So there are files you cannot edit.

But you can! Whatever program you are using to edit, all you have to do is use the start menu (assuming you're not being tortured by the despicable Windows 8. I don't even WANT to know how that one works....) to find the program, notepad for instance. Right click notepad and select "run as administrator" from the start menu there. Now you can edit your file.

Windows 8 claims you don't need a start menu! I suppose you could use Windows Explorer to do the same thing. I might start up the beast in my secure cage (Virtualbox) to check it out tonight.

Psssst! There's another way to do it. Over at Softpedia they have a prograom called Grant Admin Full Control. It even gives you an Explorer right-click context menu item, grant admin full control (of course!).

So you go to your SH4 directory, get into the moddable files, right-click them one by one and select grant admin full control (say that 10 times really fast). That frees up those files for your editing without editing as administrator.

I don't know that it's any easier, but it does allow you to edit using any software you wish without opening the editor as administrator. Maybe you'd be using Notepad for some things, WinMerge for others, or my favorite, Notepad++ (don't even think about it, OF COURSE these are free. I hesitate to use commercial software when the free stuff is as good or better).

You must remember that I'm an Ubuntu Linux user and EXPECT the best stuff in life to be free.

Less money for important stuff means more money available for GAMES!

Adding Icecream to Cake OR Pie is heresy of the highest order!! I have this argument with my daughters and mother every holiday meal or birthday! Lol

Adding icecream to Anything alters the preferred cream texture of aforementioned icecream and makes the cake or pie soupy, as well as diluting its flavour! Vino, you've got to back me on this- consider the global consequences!

...my mother also thinks cheddar cheese on apple pie is a good thing, when all right thinking people must surely agree that such an act berefts the humanity from all involved.

There is a simpler way to bypass the UAC security problem and that is to take ownership of the Ubisoft directory.
Find the install of SH4, my example is D:\Program Files(x86)\Ubisoft\Silent Hunter Wolves of the Pacific. Right-click the Ubisoft folder and select properties, select the Security tab at the top, and then select Users (your name-PC\Users), it will show you in the Permissions for Users section if you have got full control of it or not. If you haven't, select the Edit tab and select the Users (your name-PC\Users) again and then select Full control, make sure everything is ticked except the Special permissions box and select Apply. That should stop all the UAC nonsense from your Win7 OS, you should only do this for software that you trust though, so be careful how you use this feature.
