DVD REPLACING STEAM

Hi Guys
I've been running the download version over the past few months and I have now bought the DVD version as I want to use MODS.
If I delete the UBISOFT folder in PROGRAMME FILES and the GAME LAUNCHER in PROGRAMME FILES x86 and then run the REGISTRY CLEANER is there anything else I need to do before loading the DVD.

I'm not sure but I think the game has a place in the Steam folder too. That is true for my copy of Skyrim. It actually runs from there.

If the steam game saves are in My Documents\SH5 you want to save them elsewhere for copy back after installing the DVD version. If the saves are in the steam folder...try the same thing. I don't know if they are the same file types.

After install, you can copy the saves back to My Documents\SH5 and hope for the best.

first you MUST uninstall all mods for the game then run the game uninstaller to remove everything from everywhere then open and check the programs directory and delete any remaining leftover steam, ubisoft, or game files and do the same for your documents folder too

The Steam version is not "the download version." If you buy from Amazon, the download is identical to what you get on the DVD. I'm certain there are other vendors who sell the same package via download. The Steam version is the Steam version. The Steam sh5.exe file - the core file of the game - is "packed" (read "encrypted") and can not be executed. Only at runtime, via the Steam software, is the executable sh5.exe created, in a transient form that resists all but sophisticated efforts to save or view it - or change it. You don't buy anything from Steam. You lease their code, which they let you use subject to their controls and restrictions.

Think of leasing a car. You can drive the car - although you can't drive it to Canada or Mexico. You can't make any changes to it, though. If you hang on a JC Whitney blower and paint racing stripes down the sides, the lease is void. If you even install a better sound system, the lease is void. Because it is never really your car. That's how Steam works.

But all this is not true of most downloads. They are the same as on the DVD, with sometimes DRM software in the installer to discourage piracy. It's a big difference. No one who gets a game from Steam should think they are buying "the download version." They aren't buying anything. They're just leasing. Some people find these terms acceptable. Some people lease cars, and most of them are perfectly happy with the arrangement. But, just as with leasing a car, it is important for you the customer to understand the true nature of the transaction, or you may be very disappointed.

For putting me right. I thought steam was a slang term for a download. I bought my download from UBISOFT. At the time I did not now Subsim exited. Is there any advantage with the DVD over the download I am using?
Again I always thought you could only download MODS from the DVD version not from the download version. Have I also got that wrong?

My download from Amazon is compatible with every mod I've ever tried to use. (My modlist is now up to 87 entries.) I don't know about the UbiSoft download but as long as you are not tied to Steam, you should be able to handle anything too. Steam won't let you patch the .exe, which means you can't use TDW's Patcher and its associated enhancements. You probably don't need to uninstall the SH5 version you've been playing. Just download the mods and dive in. I suggest Sober's Mod List for a starter. It gets rid of funnies, adds a lot of capabilities, and has great-lloking graphics. And he has the current active download site for every mod on the list. No hunting the net for a mod that hasn't been available for a year!
