Laptops

Hi all
Does anyone use their laptop to run sh3, and does it run ok?
I always thought that laptops don't have the power or cooling systems to run games without damaging he laptop itself.

Yep, will usually run fine. One thing to watch out for is resolution, laptops may be fine but if you get a netbook you may be stuck with a resolution impossible for SH3. Just check it can run 1024x768.

Modern laptops are quite good now, even a mid-range model is much better than just about any desktop from the mid-'00s.

No problem with my new Laptop HP A8 Vision AMD 1TB hard drive, running Windows 8. It depends on the spec. You need sufficient GB Ram (mines 8GB) and really a decent graphics card I have a Radeon 7600 which runs quite smoothly with no problems. I can even run SH5 on it as well as SH3 & SH4Gold, but I play mostly SH3 GWX with quite a few extra Mods added. Most mid priced Laptops have internal graphics cards and are not suitable for Gaming

If you've got one, it can't hurt to try it.

Watch out for overheating though. Mine was shutting down after several hours of playing and I didn't know why till it finally popped up an info screen before shutting off. Turned out it was the CPU thermal protector shutting it off as it was getting too hot. I got a Cool Master Storm cooling pad, and all is well now. It now runs 20+ degrees Centigrade cooler than before.

I have a Sagar NP8150 and SH3/SH4 (modded) runs just fine on it. I play Assassins Creed, Fallout 3 and others with no problem.

I also want to point out that cleaning your laptop's cooling system once in a while will have a huge positive impact on performance.

After two years, the heat sink can accumulate a pad of dust a half-centimeter thick. My old laptop would overheat and force-shutdown.

If you know what you're doing, you can disassemble the laptop yourself, or just take it to a professional who will do it for $40. After doing this, my performance doubled and the overheating stopped.

I run SH3 with GWX3 @ 16km, on a 8 year old Vaio with 2Gb RAM, a NVidia 7400 and a Centrino 1.7Ghz CPU (rated @ 2.4Ghz), and it runs perfectly. It plays really well, the only slow down I get is if I use external view close up on a ship on fire. Although leaving a busy harbour doesn't give me any frame rate issues, it's just ships on fire close up.

When I'm at home I hook my laptop upto my 42" TV. Standing on the bridge looks fantastic doing that.
