I am heading home to Kiel and get a radio message that an enemy cruiser and 3 destroyers are on the North Sea, AN4394. I know how to read the grid, but the "94" in the message has me confused. AN43 and AN 94 are almost 700km apart. How do I read this report?
Thanks for all the help you've given this noob MJ |

From one noob to another...sort of...
In simple terms, each grid square is sub-divided into nine squares, which are further divided into nine more squares. Each set of sub-divisions is numbered left-to-right in rows across from top to bottom; top row is 1-2-3, second row is 4-5-6 and bottom row is 7-8-9. Thus, grid square AN4394 means the middle-left square of the lower right square of AN43. In directional terms that position is in the middle-western square of the southeastern square of AN43. Confusing? Sketch it out on a piece of graph paper for clarity. Hope that helps. |

This is the best description I've found, it gives the full description of Gustav's post above
http://www.german-navy.de/kriegsmari.../feature6.html So in the square shown in Gustav's post that woul be AN (or whatever) 5619 - if it was the middle mini square highlighted (the red 1), it would be 5615.... and so on... Each of those mini squares are 6 nautical miles by 6 nautical miles.
