Default Another UK High Street Name Could Disappear

Pretty soon it won't be worth the effort to go shopping in ones high street

Quote:
Clothing chain Republic has confirmed widespread fears, announcing that it has called in the administrators.
The Leeds-based retailer, which has 121 stores and about 2,500 staff, said it had appointed accountants from Ernst & Young to take over running of the firm.
The administrators said they had already made 150 staff at the firm's head office in Leeds redundant.

You mean it is now Jim?

The only time I go shopping at the High Street (which the one with the most useful shops is about 20 miles away) is to get Christmas stuff, and I didn't even get to do that this year because pay was a bit wonky.

When you compare High street rent prices to online hosting prices, and then factor in the cost of petrol to get to the high street, or bus/train/tram tickets, and add parking or lack of to that. It's not particularly surprising that so many high streets are becoming rows of boarded up shops. We're in our...what...third recession in the space of a decade, people go for the cheapest option, which in 9/10 cases right now is online.

If people want to reverse the trend, then High streets need to be made easier to access, cheaper to use and have a bigger incentive for customers (read lower prices).

One of the few high street stores I visit these days is M&S...partly because of the high quality goods and foodstuffs they sell but mainly because the wife works there and I have a 20% staff discount card

Look at this from my point of view.

When any store goes out of business for any reason?
People like me make money demo-ing them.

Then I make money again by installing a new floor!!

There's some people over on your side of the Pond that do the same stuff I'm sure.

(You do re-use the space don't you?)

Freaking Wal-Mart!

I could tell you stories about how they screw Contractors!!
I know several that went bust because Wal-Mart would not pay what they owed!!

We will not touch a Wal-Mart no matter what price is offered!
(Unless it's just to burn it to the ground!)

Walmart purchased one of the UK's top three supermarket retailers (ASDA) a few year ago and thus far they appear to be doing a good job but I remain suspicious of any retailer holding a majority holding in any retail sector in the present times.
