Save game crashes

Hey guys
After a long break from SH3(a couple years) I've reinstalled the game (GWX3 and Commander) along with my past list of mods.

The only new mods I have added are Hsie's patch and Stiebler's add on. As far as I can tell both of these excellent additions to the game are working as advertised.

My question is this: I cannot save an in game mission either single or campaign if I have had any contact whatsoever with an enemy warship or cargo vessel.

I am very aware of all the old bugs regarding this issue and have revisited the old threads just to confirm. No close proximity to land, must be surfaced, at least 30 km from enemy ship, etc. I never had this problem in the past and am wondering if there may be an issue that I'm not aware of rearing it's ugly head.

I can save the game any time, anywhere and it comes back ok but but if I sink or have a fight with an enemy vessel then leave the area (50 km) and then save. When re starting that mission I get to "Not so long ago" then the screen just crashes to black.

Before I go and disable one mod at a time trying to nail down the possible cause I'm hoping someone here has a suggestion.
