Can anyone share with me how to pick up or rescue people from water and/or missions? I've tried surfacing under them, approaching them while surfaced, but cannot get them onboard. Any tips?

well you cant just pick them up randomly so it needs to be a mission objective to be able to pick them up.

you get close to them then look at them in the binoculars and lock onto them, then you can pick them up

Also I know you only can pick the survivors of your side. If you don´t want to contribute to the war effort in the style of Mush Morton, and you want to rescue some japs, you can´t do it...

You really have to go slow to get a lock and hurry and click the icon to save them.

It doesn't have to be a mission, you can save any allied downed pilots. If you happen to be in an area where allied aircraft are attacking TF's, many get shot down. I've picked up as many as 20 after some mass attacks.

Aloha, indeed..you cannot save the japs..but you can shoot them out of the water with your machinegun.
Put also a liferaft on your conto.
Good target practice!!

You must see the survivors with binoculars, "pick" the pitiful guys with space bar (as you do when you select a target for guns) when they are on the little triangle, and you will have the boys. First, you must put your boat at low, very low distance of the survivors. Only works with allied boys; you can´t rescue japs or enemies (Mush Morton doctrine).

Regards.

I'm still having trouble with allied rescues. I chose LIFEBOAT mission, arrived at area with 3 allied survivors in water. 1st attempt was a no go. 2nd survivor, I tried several attempts. I back up, go forward, back up, go forward. I tried approaching by looking through binoculars (cannot lock on) Observation periscope (all I can do is watch survivor flounder in water) Attack periscope ( can see but cannot lock onto saurvivor) Have tried submersing and blowing ballast ( in hopes of finding him on deck.) but still fruitless. Could someone share with what I'm doing wrong?

Must be slower than 5 knots (i prefer 1 to 3 knots) and within 300 or 500 yards.
That's the best i can remember, haven't played rescue missions in years.

When you get the life ring icon to light up just click as fast as you can.
May take several clicks. You have to use the binos. I move the binos with the arrow keys and keep the mouse on the icon. in calm seas ti's not to hard but heavy seas almost imposable.

Once again, I thank you for your help and feedback. I'm in Lifeboat mission and will keep trying over the weekend. I'm trying binoculars but never get any "ring" icon to appear. Just see a lot of bobbing in the water. Hope they can tread long enough for me to rescue them! Blub.
