tips for finding targets?

im currently on the south atlantic convoy mission of africas west coast
im receiving no bdu reports of any relivence and getting no ships appearing randomlybeen down here over a month in game time and not spotted so much as a fishing boat on either visualy on sonar or even bdu report is this normal or am i doing something wrong, does anyone have any tips on locating targets?
