The game is worth buying if you consider how cheap it is. But it is not worth playing in vanilla mode. It gets boring quickly. You need to mod it, and for a nice modlist, look up sober's mod list in the mod forums. I use a tweaked version of his modlist myself, with small differences, but thats because I don't like to have ctd's every 5 minutes, so I removed open horizons 2 and a few others.

Go ahead and buy it, but stay away from steam version if you want unofficial patches to work properly. And you also need to have patience, you can only download 1 file per day in the beginning, so it will take 2 months to finish downloading the modlist, perhaps 1 month if half of it uses external file hosting, as it probably does.

If you can get to 10 downloads per day, you will have the modlist in 3-6 days, around there. I suggest that you sit back and read technical things about the game while you do this, to shoot some time.

yeh found the steam thing out the hard way with SH3. the CFGs that are worth moding don't work properly like renown instead of allied=1 i set it allied =10. thats just one of the things i normally modded myself. GWX seems to work but who knows after getting screwed by steam i went and baught off of amazon

A quick search would have given you the answer, multiple times over. Someone asks this question at least once a week.

It is so cheap, if your computer can run it smoothly then yes, it is worth getting at this price.

I went back to SH4 because of performance issue and will get back to SH5 when I have a faster system.
