Default Spec Ops: The Line

So it is my summer break right now, and i was genuinly looking for something to occupy my time with.

I wanted a mindless shooter to take my mind of things, and so I gave Spec Ops a spin.

IT IS AMAZING!!!!!

The game itself is actually kindof underwelming. Gameplay was bland, and cover mechanics were choppy. The guns just didn't feel good, there wasn't enough feedback.

However, the storyline is probably the best I have ever seen in an FPS. It is as good/better than the best RPGs. Now it is a rahash of Heart of Darkness, but this is a version done really, really well. I didn't like Apocalypse Now, Vietnam didn't feel like a good replacement for the 18th century Congo. However, post apocalyptic Dubai felt perfect!

The story felt touching, I have never experienced this level of emotion in an FPS since Call of Duty 4. The story offered choice, and the choices you make directly effected the ending.

The visual design is stunning, the glamour of Dubai juxtaposed with the despair of disaster combine to create some of the most beautiful set pieces I have ever seen.

As for multiplayer, just forget it. The mechanics weren't good to begin with, I would probably not enjoy the game in multiplayer.

If you haven't tried it yet, give Spec Ops: The Line a shot, it is a genuinely good game. In this age of COD inspired cookie cutter shooters, I am pleasantly surprised by this story driven FPS.

Probably going to get it. Mainly because of this ending sentence in RPS's review:
"One thing’s for sure: I feel sick at the idea of playing another shooter any time soon."

I don't mind if the action is a bit clumsy (didn't mind it in Alpha Protocol either as the other aspects were great), especially if the story steals the show. Also I like to support fresh ideas in the field of FPS games.

Alpha Protocol was a surprisingly enjoyable game.

That it was.

Must admit it sounds pretty intriguing from what I've read about it so far. If it wasn't for my utter contempt of modern shooters I'd probably have jumped on it.

Maybe someday, during a sale of sorts.
