I'm not very up to speed on U.S. laws regarding taxation policy for dual-citizenship, but this does make me wonder. Also, do the protections afforded Swiss citizens and their assets held in Swiss banks apply to dual U.S. citizens and offer them a shelter against prying IRS eyes?...

Maybe she's got a hankering for real swiss cheese. Or she because she wouldnt need to obtain a visa everytime to travel around most of the EU. Of course theres that tax shelter thingy which may have persuaded her to become a swiss citizen over becoming a french or brit.

While we all have opinions concerning Bachmann, this does raise up some interesting concerns.

Leaving the persona of Bachmann out of it, let's look at what dual citizenship means.

The correct term is actually dual nationality. The key to dual nationality is

What are people's opinions here on whether a member of congress should be allowed to serve when the voluntarily swear allegiance to an other country? The constitution does not address this.

There is also the concern with members of congress with dual allegiance having access to classified or sensitive information, but that's another issue.

So should a member of congress be allowed to serve after swearing allegiance to a foreign country?

Iirc, US law does not recognize dual citizenship. As far as we are concerned, you are either a US citizen, or you are not.

If the Swiss want to recognize Bachmann as a Swiss miss, that's their business, as long as she doesn't renounce her US citizenship in the process.

Umm no. It's the least "socialist" in Western Europe.

The Tea Party would attempt to paint Switzerland as the second coming of a Marxist utopia if Bachmann kept her dual citizenship. I realize that the Swiss are a lot less socialist than say, Scandinavian countries, but the Tea Party isn't really big on subtlety and nuance, or making distinctions based on fact.

To them Europe = eeeeeeevil socialist, America = super awesome last bastion of capitalism, completely ignoring where that's not true in both locations.
