Default SS United States

Latest scuttlebutt has it the mothballed 60 year old ocean liner SS United States might be turned into a shopping mall. It could possibily remain in the Deleware or be towed to someother place on the eastern seaboard to carry out her new duties.

You know I looked at that web page and they have a section that compares the
United States to the Titanic which is really a bit unfair comparing two ships built 40 years apart is not really a fair comparison of course the newer ship is going to be superior and have a safer record.

They seem to think that the SS United States was far superior which in some respects is true but only due to improved technology and safety over a 40 year time span.It claims that the Titanic would have been obsolete in only a few years but the same thing really applies to any large ship no matter the time period. And the

Seems like a section written by someone trying hard to draw those that have interest in the Titanic and get them interested and hopefully supporting the SS United Sates.I see noting wrong with that but comparing it to the Titanic is not the best route to take. And as I said the comparison is not a fair one why not compare the United Sates to a competing design like the SS France or the QEI or QEII?

They probably picked Titanic because they assume the average web viewer might have actually heard of that ship. "Wasn't there a movie?" I guess overestimating the intelligence of their audience is not something they believe in.

As for the SS United States I think I'd rather see her scrapped than reduced to a ship mall.

Ugg bad idea. Either a museum or scrap like the Warspite.

But surely they can have found a real ship to compare, not a made up for Hollywood ship like Titanic is.
Does anyone know if there is a book of the film, maybe with a better storyline?

Make a reef of her.

Build a bigger, faster more awesome and totally disgustingly obnoxious USS America and call it good.

That would be better than becoming a shopping mall ships are made to sail the seas not be some cheesy tourist attraction.I think what happened to the United States is some folks saw her as an easy way to get some prime real estate for a cheap price(it is much cheaper than buying the land and building a large complex on top of it) I doubt their real interest in the "history" of the ship they just want to make money. You notice that they do not want to keep the ship as it is (or was) and allow people to tour it like they have done with the USS Alabama or the USS Missouri oh no that would not make them any money.Their true motive is to make money of the ship under the vial of it being a historical vessel. If the SS United States knew what these people had in mind for her shed sail out into the and sink herself.

The costs to do anything with the vessel is astronomical. I see the scrap yard for her before long.

Making her an artificial reef is a very good idea a ship of that size would attract a lot of marine life and that would attract divers and sport fisherman which would attract tourist dollars in the region she was in.That would cost some money true but it would have long term benefits.

Of course I recall viewing a TV show about the SS United States and she has a lot of asbestos inside so that makes doing anything with her expensive thanks to the need to clean up all the asbestos before anything else is done.I bet she gets towed to India or Bangladesh where they lack EPA and OSHA laws and gets broken apart.

I want to claim her for myself, take her down to Newport News put four new engines in her like modern cruise ships have that pivot and spew out water faster than you can concieve, put volunteers on her (women on one deck and men on the other) and take her on a little high speed trip to Rio to break the old record of New York to Rio which is probably owned by an old clipper ship anyway.

After all the news machines in New York and Rio get hold of her for a news story of an old lady breaking the record then we can get some serious investors to realize that true charity is when you don't want anything in return.

Finish her off to her old glory with all of the love she deserves and let her spend her final days on inter island runs in Hawaii till she becomes a floating hotel for VIP's ... remember she was built in the USA and only USA registered ships can ply the waters between the states with the rule for other ships having to stop in a foreign country at least once.

I only need $300 million to safely sail her to Hawaii instead of the embarrassing tow she has already had to Turkey to remove the abestoes on her steel walls.

She was overbuilt anyway and has many good years left all it takes is a little loving.

God Bless the SS United States
