Default Did I just punch out Cthulu?

Im very curious about something. On a return trip from my first succesful patrol. My crew spotted a large group of warships. I knew they coudnt all be destroyers. So I submerged, turned on silent running, cut off the engines, and waited. Once I was in the middle of the formation I went to parascope depth, and what do I see? Two battleships, several cruisers, and many destroyers. I identify the battleships as Fuso classes and hit one with three torps, before I can confirm the kill I see destroyers coming to my position and slip back underwater.

So, im wondering, How many torpedoes would it take to bring down a Fuso. How likely is it that I took down a battleship on my first patrol?

First, if I haven't already:

Second, thanks for the warning. I'll pass on clicking the link. I sometimes cannot even spare 2 minutes and breeze through reading the posts.
As far as sinking a Fuso, it all depends on where the torps hit. Others may differ, but I can say that I've never sunk a Fuso with less than 3 torps. Still, it often takes me 4 torps to sink one. Once the ship begins to sink, your crew will usually inform you that "She's going down sir."

If all the torps hit the same area, the chances are likely (due to the sim's damage mechanics) that you didn't sink it. You have to hit separate areas of the vessel for maximum effect.

If I happen to have a sub with 6 torp tubes, I like to fire 3 at its engines, and then the others at turrents. That was if I dont outright sink it, It usally will stop moving or slow down enought that it gets left behind. This its like sinking a really large merchant

How it sinks depends on if you're playing stock or using mods that correct the damage zones. Each ship has so many number of damage zones, once a zone substains 100% hitting that same area would cause no more, however with a BB it may take a few torps to each zone to cause 100% damage. You can also sink a ship by causing damage to many areas, which seems to work better.

With stock I've sunk some BB's with 2, once even 2, with mods most the time a Fuso or Kongo take 4-6.

Using TMO, I can usually nail a big BB, even the Fuso Class, with an average of 3 fish.

It depends on where you hit them though. Areas of best damage, are the forward and aft magazines where ammo, and powder are stored, and behind the aft turret is also a good point for targeting.

On my first patrol, I was tasked with an agent insertion just S of Osaka, Japan. Slipped in and dropped off the agent, and - as it was just before dawn, decided to sneak into a nearby naval base and see what we could see. Hit a Fuso with four torpedoes and sank her in shallow water. Her huge superstructure was still poking above the waves as we departed. Got my first Bronze Star for that, too. Now it's mid-October 1944 and the biggest warship I've sunk in 2 years has been an Akizuki-class DD.

I just had a frustrating run with the USS Seal.

Had detected a Japanese TF just off Luzon and attempted to intercept but was too close, got detected by the escorts and driven off.

Stroke of luck had it, ran into a second Jap TF 4 hours later (game time) that was trailing a number of miles behind, this one with two Kongo battleships in situ.

Managed to maneuver in and get a good shot on the lead Kongo and let loose all 4 torpedos. All 4 hit, but only two were successfull detonations, the other two were frustrating duds!!

I took Seal down deep to avoid the escorts and then popped back up to PD when I was past them, and discovered the Kongo was listing very badly with her stern sinking in the water. I watched as long as I could but in the end, the TF moved off with a still listing Kongo.....no battleship kill for the Seal, only credit for damage!!

But given the damage those two detonations did.....had ALL of the torpedo's been successfull, that Kongo would've gone down to the deep blue!!!
