Default Starting Ports

I'm near the end of TMO and looking forward to DL'ing the latest version 2.5 plus RSRD. What ports do you like to start from? Convoy hunting is fun but I would like to go up against some larger ships, BB, carriers. I read some other posts about large navel battles. Will the game point you to some of them or do you just have to know the correct date and show up there? I guess that's why I want to know which ports you guys prefer to sail out of.

Thanks for your recommendation.

Brisbane or Fremantle are best for IJN fleet action.

TMO/RSRDC:
I usually start out with an S-Boat near Manila. This means I'll most likely be transferred to Java and then Fremantle when Manila gets overrun. As far as merchant traffic is concerned, Fremantle probably offers the best early-war location-to-action ratio of all the ports, though some preferences will differ. Out of Fremantle, I can never seem to make it to my patrol objectives w/o expending all my ammo along the way due to the high volume of merchant traffic, usually in the Makassar Strait.

RSRDC keeps a pretty religious eye on historical traffic and epic battles. I'm (metaphorically speaking) a veteran of several major SHIV Pacific battles including Midway, Vella Gulf, Empress Augusta Bay, Savo Island, (all) Guadalcanal Naval battles, Leyte Gulf, Mariannas/Philippinne Sea, Operation Ten-go, etc. These are just a few of the possibilities you can find in the RSRDC. The trick is to know (historically) the battles and their locations, and to arrive (at least) a couple of days early while lingering for a few days after. This is due to some time differences which appear to exist for one reason or another. RSRDC is quite accurate. If there was a battle to be fought (historically), chances are that you'll eventually find it in RSRDC. Of course, the easy way is to cheat and look into the campaign files, but I like to play it as close to real as I can, and the actual sub skippers weren't always privy to the dates, times and locations of specific actions.

Another great port is Brisbane, which put you conveniently close to the Guadalcanal, New Georgia, Rabaul, etc., actions. There are many skippers who will prefer other ports for other reasons. You'll eventually gain your own preferences.
Good Luck.

If it's battles you're after, you'll need to know a lil history and pay attention to the lil movies you get while docked showing major events going on.

With RSRD I also start out of Manila as many large invasion groups invade the Philippines, usually you'll get patrol stars for these. By default you end up in Surabaya as home port, but Java gets invaded late Feb/early March, some very large invasion groups along the coast. I will then move to Brisbane ASAP if I can transfer there for the Solomon's campaign which will keep you busy all of 42, but Oct-Nov 42 just hang near Savo and you'll see large battles between the fleets.

There are many others, the Battle of the Philippines Sea is a big one in Oct 44. The good thing about RSRD is groups leave correct ports at the correct time heading to battle, so pick good ambush points where you can't miss them.

Here is a link to a site with animated view of the WWII naval battles in the pacific.

http://www.pacificwaranimated.com/

It shows when and where the battles took place.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I was looking for. When you go to the transfer page, there is not much of a description on what you'll likely go up against, which i guess is how it should be.

Prior to 2.5, have any of you ever completed a campaign? Does it just end? I'd like to try to make it to the end of the war but when given the chance of an upgrade and an accurate sim it's hard not to restart now.

One more question, is there a change log that shows what is new in 2.5?

Thanks again guys.

Duci always has a change log for his mods. Read his readme, explains a lot about TMO.

As far as the end of the war goes you'll just have to get there to find out.

Restart with a good mod like TMO, stock is bugged and a waste of time IMHO.....

I've finished several careers from start to finish, unhistoric as it is for a skipper to do 40-60 patrols and sink a 3 million tons, but it's fun to do.

Depending on your tonnage, you may get invited to watch the hula girls dance...
