Helmut Kemke, died last night with more than 230,000 tons under his belt (realism 90%). U27 lost with all hands. Sad. And the demise was just ridiculous. An Inspector Clouseau moment
December 1943. Night attack against a convoy in Gibraltar. 2 ore carriers hit but still struggling in the middle lane of the convoy. U27 was spotted by escorts and dived at a vertical course to the convoy. And at a depth of around 30 meters, a collision with the sinking merchant. Bernard strikes again... ![]() Starting in 1939 with a Type II at Kiel tonight.

![]() ![]() Perhaps you were submerged, but your use of the word 'spotted' rather than 'detected' made me think you were on the surface. Either way, just crappy luck.

I am impressed you made it past the radar equiped escorts to get close enough to shoot.

Weather was awful and I was decks awash. I know its a risk when radar comes into play. I use this technique after 1942 if I feel that I might try to make a run for it when the weather is really crappy and visibility is low.
![]() But I had placed myself in a bad position to run for it, trying to position my boat perfectly for a shot. Complacency after many succesful attempts = death. ![]()

Live and learn, err - die and learn. Still, to get to '43 is very respectable. I struggle to get our of August '39.

You have my sympathy. I had a daring escape foiled by forgetting that the destroyer I had just pegged while looking for me was sinking *at speed*.
Drifted into my lane and nearly pressed me down into the ground. Only barely escaped. On the upside, that hid me from the other destroyer for a while. Minor hull damage, hurt my flak guns. But wow, respect for going after a convoy so boldly in '43. |

Evidently Bernard made it out alive and transferred to my boat as watch officer.
While waitling for the Illustrious to make her return trip off the northwest coast of Scotland, we made a submerged daylight attack on a lone Granville. Hit her in the sweet spot and she started going down immediately. I knew there was a D class to the north within radio range so I ordered ahead standard, surface, and course 180 to avoid contact with her. After ordering tube 1 reloaded with a Type II, I popped to the bridge just in time to see the sinking Granville dead ahead about 50 yards off. Bernard never said a thing!!!! I just had time to order hard left rudder. (Read: PANIC! Mash the "[" key over and over again) Luckily, her forward deck was awash and we road easily up and came to a screeching halt on her foredeck. I could have climbed out on the cargo boom were I so inclined. I ordered damage control manned, but there was no damage reported... ...yet. I ran back to the bridge just as the Granville's boiler exploded. Those things play holy heck with my framerate from far away. You can imagine what happened. An orange screen and FPS = 0. Hitting F7, the DC screen, got things screeching and clanking again but this time there is major flooding forward and two injured men in the bridge. As the Granville sank, we refloated and got on our way. No deaths, except I shot Bernard and dumped his worthless carcass overboard.
