Default Still the best WWII sub sim

Silent Hunter 3 still has the most immersion and atmosphere of any WWII sub sim for my money.

Last night, I encountered a large convoy in dreadful weather conditions.....huge waves, high winds and very heavy rain. I spent several hours attempting to avoid detection and yet position myself for a decent shot at an ammunition carrier.

Doing this was incredibly hard. Eventually, I fired my torps and went deep to slowly escape. I heard the torpedoes impacting as they hit their target, and then the pinging started.

The attack and escape took just over two hours.

The 1.5 add on to SH4 never offered the same level of immersion, and from what I've seen of SH5, neither does that game.....yet.

Silent Hunter 3 (GWX3 Gold and SH3 Commander) rocks.

I agree, its one of the most immersive games I've ever played full stop, not just sub-sim based. You can't beat the feeling of being out in the middle of the ocean I can literally get lost in it for hours at a time. My wife looked at my PC screen the other night, laughed and said 'oh, you're in a submarine again'.

The real Kaeluns never had to deal with such pressing issues as cancelling a torpedo run in order to go make their wives a cuppa!

My wife and I have a deal. When she wants to watch some recorded shows on the DVR that I have no interest in, she does that and I become a submarine Captain for a few hours.

Hahaha, sounds like we're 'all in the same boat' so to speak

After all these years of trying different sims, I concur. Sh5 has the eye candy but it just didnt do it for me. Sh3, epspecially with the help of this site, has the best mods and overall best game play.

Couldn't agree more. The combination of SH3/GWX and the super work of the modders makes this game very enjoyable and sometimes hard on the nerves.

I love this game!

Yep, that's pretty much our agreement as well. The little compromises to maintain marital bliss...

Yup, I've been doing SH3 for years.

I'm tempted to try some of the newer versions for the eye candy, but I just can't leave game I haven't beaten!

SH3 is the gold standard, to be sure. Even after all of these years, the GWX version of it is absolutely bloody awesome. I really can't recall any game (I prefer the word "sim" for this one) that I've enjoyed for that long.

I'll say this though: SH5 might actually surpass it eventually. It's already well on its way and I can't honestly say that I'd want to do without either one of them.

Sh3 is the only game I play since 2005.

I play GWX3.0 with it and use ShCommander and a lot of mods that I find here.

Sh3 best "game" ever. Period.

Never played it, but I'm curious what is the 'problem' with SH5 in a few words?

Play sh5 + mods and sh3 + GWX + mods. You'll figure it out yourself.

SH3 with GWX Gold is really gold, SH3 & GWX & hardcoded exe with other popular mods should be named Platinum Edition
My thoughts are exactly the same - after 6 years there is no better sub sim for PC. Any news about any successor?
