Anyone Know A Quick Way To Trigger A Sub Upgrade?

In my career......It's January '43. I've gone through the S boats, to the Sargo, and now it plopped me in a Tambor. I want to skip the Tambor and go straight to a Gato.....

Is there a flag within the save game somewhere?

thanks,

I have never tried it myself but I assume it is possible to go into the files for
your career and assign yourself a Gato class.

Honestly though there is not much point the only really big difference between the Tambor and a Gato class is the Gato can dive a bit deeper also your assigned base has an effect on what sub classes you can possibly get upgraded to.

Or you can start a career in a Gato.

Out of curiosity, what is your renown, overall tonnage, realism percentage and how many patrols have you completed? I do not think it is possible to "skip" classes.

I'm playing at 100%, overall tonnage.....it's up there, I average 7k-35k per patrol....I had one where I nailed 95K......lI just happened to be by Truk in the perfect position when 2 Kongos, and a Chitose came screaming out of the harbor in a perfect column formation......... I was<1000yds off (and parallel to) their line of advance. First Kongo went down with 3 fish, second crippled with 3, finished off with 2 more from the stern nest......Chitose came into range, crippled with a spread of 4 (1 miss, and finished her off with .......

I have about 17K renown in the bank, at least 20+ patrols....I think the jinx might have been not taking an initial upgrade offering when I was in the S boat. I wanted to be transferred to Brisbane and that happens with the S from Freemantle....

Anyhow, I just started a new construction '42 campaign. USS Scorpion...My zodiac sign!

I really like that 1 extra knot in the Gato.....although it doesn't seem there anymore with the latest TMO. I guess I need that officer with the "Ahead Emergency" skill.

Came in handy with the Tambor when I was being chased on the surface by a subchaser.......I pelted him with 5" 51 from 6000 yds....took a while! hard to hit at that distance! He slowed down when damaged and I ran out of his range at 22kts.

That might be the issue, along with the transfers. I have only completed the campaign mode once and I always took my new commands, when offered and made no transfers, except when forced. My career lasted 18 months before my skipper got sent to Annapolis to teach. My tonnage varied roughly the same as yours. If I wanted free tonnage, I would raid Melekeok. Other than that, I cannot say. Your renown would certainly be high enough for new boats or the "desk job".

Ugh....now I'm encountering other weirdness...........

When I started the new construction campaign..........

I was dispatched to Pearl for first patrol post sea trials.....

Whenever I save the game and then load it.........all my navigation plots have disappeared. Happens like clockwork. Wipes all my marks and course plot off the map.

Doesn't happen with the starting in '41 regular campaign....

It is possible to skip classes but a whole lot of work.

First save your current command.
Start a new career in the appropriate year and boat class that you want.
Upgrade your new boat with Radars, Deck and AA guns.
Save this new boat

Then very carefully edit your saved crew from your old command into your new boat. This is tedious and you can't make a mistake.

My Documents\SH4\Data\Cfg\SaveGames\0000000n\ActiveUs erPlayerUnits.upc

This file may also be in:
My Documents\SH4\Data\Cfg\SaveGames\0000000n\UPCIniti al\ActiveUserPlayerUnits.upc

and:
My Documents\SH4\Data\Cfg\UPCInitial\ActiveUserPlayer Units.upc

Go Compartment by Compartment in the file and only replace crew who have a position in your new boat.

It can be done if it is necessary. The biggest problem is the gun crew. I would advise putting them in "Damage Repair Team" or "Crew Berthing" if you have that and move them back to the guns after making sure your editing job worked.

Good luck & Happy Hunting!
