Airbases

I notice when I click on a friendly airbase there is a ring and a list of squadrons, I think.

My question is there a purpose to it, other than knowing the range radius of the airbases or can I send out those planes to scout out for me while I'm on patrol?

I have read somewhere that if you report a contact within the friendly airbases range, planes are automatically sent to attack the contat, well convoy
