Default help out an hold SH4'er

Hi all,

I have bought a new rig... trying to install SH3 but oh the problems!!!

First of... I have downloaded patch 1.4b but i get the following error message when I try to run the install:

" This program cannot update the installed version of Silent Hunter III US DVD v1.0 to v1.3 because of the following reason:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Ubisoft\SilentHunterIII\data\Menu\de_help.tx t: unknown version".

No doubt further problems will follow as I try to install GWX but getting over this hurdle first of all would be great!

I leave it to the humble community to assist

If you have a recent copy of SH3, purchased within the last couple of years (at least), it is probably already patched to v1.4. Find your game folder and right-click on the Sh3.exe file, click Properties, and look through the info under the different tabs that come up in the Properties box for the file version. If it comes up as 1,4,0 etc. you have v1.4 already.

If it's not already patched there are several different versions of the patch depending on which version of the game you have: digital or DVD, US or other regions (EMEA):

so you need to make sure you have the right one for your particular copy of the game.

thanks, I deleted the .txt files that were causing problems.

Now, I install 1.4b, install GWX and get a message saying will not work unless in 95/XP mode etc! Argh!

edit: I have original version of disk purchased ages ago!

If so it probably has Starforce (the original DRM) on it. Starforce and Win7 do not play nice together. You might try looking at the stickied threads regarding (first) Win7 and (second) getting rid of Starforce, but from what I understand most people find it's just easier to purchase a new copy of the game since that won't include Starforce. It can usually be had for $10 or less from Amazon (use the Subsim link and it benefits the site) or other sources.

Wish I could be more help but I've never had to deal with the Starforce issue myself.

Yeah, read the sticky for installing on Win7 and it'll explain how to get rid of StarFarce (officially-ish, too), no dvd, and where to install it (not default).

thanks for the hints chaps.

However... after spending hours and hours trying, nothing will get it past the screen where it moans about not working unless XP etc is installed.

SO.... downloaded from Steam (£4.99). Now... how do i get GWX to work? I tried but it complained about a terrain data file not overwriting, and then didnt continue.

Im getting pretty annoyed now
