Default Hoover's Corner - my professional writing blog

Hello, Subsimmers!

I am a professional SF and dark fantasy writer. I am also an active member of SFWA and HWA and, yes, Subsim which we all know has more clout than either of those organizations. (Some facts have to be faced.)

Anyway, I used to blog over at Live Journal and I had a lot of friends there. I also think some of you followed me over there occasionally to follow my wriitng. But since they've been having so much trouble at LJ with DOS attacks I went over to Word Press.

Anyway, I usually blog about my writing, film reviews, and other things related to the writing and publishing industry at Hoover's Corner. I sometimes blog about personal events in my life as well.

Please, feel free to drop by and comment or subscribe if you enjoy the content. I truly appreciate your guidance and support.

Best,
Kenneth Mark Hoover aka Iron Budokan
Allen, TX

Here's the link to my writing blog if you care to check it out. Thanks again!

Well I'm enjoying reading some of the movie reviews. I don't think I've ever come across anyone else who's actually seen "Sunrise" on purpose.

Awesome!

I seem to have a vague recollection of you posting it once before, long ago, but I've forgotten. Site bookmarked.

Haha, well, yeah, which should tell you a lot about me.

Yes, I posted about a year or two ago about my professional website and a big dark fantasy western story I had published by a big professional magazine. I've had lots of other stories published since then and CZP bought my novel earlier this year. It will appear late next year or early '13.

I had several members here who were interested in that and I think you were one of them. I really want to thank you for bookmarking the site and being interested, it means a lot.

I'll try to do a better job in the future keeping SubSim apprised of what is going on with my writing since there are some here who are interested. I just don't want to feel I am taking advantage of a situation, even on a general forum like this one.

I confess it's probably the only Murnau I've ever seen, unless there's something I've watched that I didn't know was his work. I started to stream "Nosferatu" from Netflix once to see how that whole dealio worked, but didn't have anything connected up to the big TV yet and didn't want to sit at my desk and watch. I need to get back to that.

Liked your review of "Metropolis" as well. The first silent movie I ever managed to sit all the way through. I was never a big fan of the genre (and it still has its annoying quirks IMO) but I'm always willing to give a certified classic a chance. Turns out movies like that are considered classics for a reason, lol. As a big sci-fi fan growing up I'd been aware of it for a long time but was completely unprepared for how awesome it would be or how taken I would be with it. Got the most recent restoration on Blu-ray when it came out and it's really something.

I do think there must be something about German Expressionism that I like, but I don't know enough about it overall to tell you what that is.

Anyway it softened me on the silents, to the point where I don't cringe when one of them turns up on my Netflix queue. OTOH, the only ones I really watch are the ones on this or that "all time greatest" list and aside from Murnau and Lang it usually ends up being Chaplin, who I've also come to adore.

I know how you feel about silent film. They do take some getting used to and like you said they are not all on the same level or created equal. Metropolis is amazing and a classic even after all these years. That staying power fascinates me.

I think what I like about them most is how they were the first films to break so much new ground in a new medium. As a writer that's pretty cool to me.

Dark fantasy is fantasy with a dark or disturbing tone. I tend to write dark westerns nowadays, at least that's what I have been concentrating on of late.

Not hardly. So many different posts are made here you couldn't be accused of taking advantage if you wanted to. Those who are interested will benefit and those who aren't won't bother. Of course I couldn't complain if I wanted to, what with all my band and grandkid threads, and they're gone now except when I choose to bring them back. Post away!
