Default Patrol area question ...

What happens if you don't go to your assigned patrol area and instead go somewhere else to hunt ?

They kill you, your family and all your friends. Not necessarily in that order.

I've only played the game using GWX, and nothing bad happens. If you have the mod to re-enable renown rewarded for performing the assigned patrol, then of course you don't get the renown for doing that.

The stock game awards some renown for going to your assigned grid, and a little more for staying there for 24 hours. As Hans Uberman said, GWX disables that so there is no penalty at all. Unless your hung up on history like I am. I use GWX, but I go to my assigned grid and stay there for two full weeks. If I find traffic I stay longer. If not, after two weeks I have a die-rolling system to see if I move on or not. Renown means nothing to me.

You'll start to feel guilty. And fear facing Dönitz when you get back to BdU.

That's all.

Most the grids I get (in vanilla) are crap. I always went there just to appease BdU. I never paid attention to renown levels for completing as i am not aware of the renown formula, and lack script reading sense the file junkies here have. I can drive the heck out of anything motorized, but the files beyond simple changes baffle me.

I also play the WAC 4.1 mod and the grids they give tend to put you near the action or in position to participate in it.

This question intrigues me as well. In basic and in the super-mods. I am interested too.

In stock you get 500 in renown for reaching the assigned grid and another 200 for completing a 24 hour patrol there. (The basic.cfg also shows a renown reward of 100 for returning all the way to base instead of teleporting back, but that feature has never worked.) You don't lose any of the renown you already have by disregarding your orders, you just forfeit what you would've gotten had you followed them.

GWX gives you no renown for any of those things (unless you mod it back in) so you don't gain renown or forfeit the possibility of it based on whether or not you follow your orders.

If you use SH3 Commander you can see what your next assigned grid is going to be prior to loading up the game to start a new patrol; you can even change it to a grid of your own choosing if you want to, or let it assign you another one at random. I've done that a couple of times when I drew one of the North Sea grids around the east coast of Britain in a Type VII, because: no.

As already mentioned, stock SH3 grants you renown with which you can purchase upgrades to crew and/or your boat. GWX removes that, but there is a mod to reinstate it, or you can do it manually by editing your SilentHunterIII /data/Cfg/Basic.cfg file to get whatever amount you want for Reaching and/or Patrolling 24 hours in your assigned objective.

If you want to avoid all this, after returning to base from your first career patrol, open My Documents/GWX/data/cfg/Careers/playername/Patrol_0.cfg

Scroll down to the 3rd line from the bottom: DeltaRenown=xxxxxx

Change that value to whatever you want. 100,000 should be more than enough to cover you for an entire career, since you'll earn additional renown for each sinking, and you can always go up it again after any patrol.

You have fun and find more ships!

I do my assignment as ordered by BDU then I roam to the happy fishing spots. I just installed WB mid patrol orders and will see how that pans out.

Same here. That way you collect the renown for reaching and patrolling the assigned grid, plus you don't get shot when you get back. Sounds like a win-win!

I run out of torpedoes about one-quarter of the way to my patrol grid. Then finally make my way to the grid and limp back to port about out of fuel. I have renown issues at this point (-300.) I think in Mission 4 I sank way too many neutral ships. Still trying to figure out the renown factors. Did a search and found a couple of informing threads. I was wondering if using the English Channel is a problem.. BdU forbade me from going through there in October '39, and was wondering if this caused me problems. I am using 1.4b and GWX 3.0, with a few mods.

Tinkering: Avoid neutrals. They cost you renown. Back in 39, the u-boats had to stop the ship, board it to check for contraband. If found, they had to get that crew to abandon ship before they could sink it. The rules eventually were relaxed but that wasn't till later. Good hunting

There is nothing wrong with turning around and heading home at that point. As mentioned above, if you're playing the stock game you get 500 renown for reaching your grid and another 200 for staying there 24 hours. You can get a lot more than that just sinking a lot of ships. Also as mentioned, it you're playing GWX there is NO renown for doing either, so unless it means something to you as a history buff there is no reason for even going there.

I'm guessing you're going there at Standard Speed or faster. Use Ahead 1/3 (the second setting, or about 8 knots) and you'll reach your grid with enough fuel to cruise for at least a month and still make it home with juice to spare.

Try not to sink any. Another thing you can do is go into your Silent Hunter 3 folder, and open Data/Cfg. Near the top you'll see the following item:

[RENOWN]
RenownReachGridObjCompleted=500
RenownPatrolGridObjCompleted=200
CompletedPatrol=100
NEUTRAL=-1
ALLIED=1
AXIS=-10
WrongShipSunk=-5000
FirstRankRenown=1000
SecondRankRenown=3500
EndCampaign=-5000

In GWX the first two will both say '0'.
You can change those to say anything you want.

The ones I've changed are

NEUTRAL=0
ALLIED=1
AXIS=-1

And my reason for doing so is based on reality. Sinking a neutral ship was frowned upon by the higher-ups, but if the ship was in a convoy it was considered fair game, and even if not kaluens were almost never punished for it. With it set to '0' I don't get any reward for sinking a neutral, but I don't get rewarded for it either.

On a couple of occasions kaleuns accidentally sank friendly ships. In ever case the kaleun was found 'not guilty' as it was usually a case of the target ship being in the wrong place and disguised as an Allied merchant. I figure I should lose some renown for sinking a friendly, but not ten times' worth.

To see the renown awarded for any particular ship, look in Data/Sea and then the ship folder. The very first file is a Cfg file that can be opened with Notepad. You'll see the Renown Awarded line for that ship. For example, NBBNelson gets you 1400 renown, and NLL (the Liberty Ship) is worth 220.

Not in stock. With GWX it's a lot more dangerous, and should be discouraged. In real life it was a suicide run.

If you're worried about renown, then don't. You never lose renown for going somewhere. Also, that order, like most of the radio messages, is there for flavor only, and in the game means nothing at all.

For a serious improvement in the way you see the game, try SH3 Commander. It's not a mod, it works with any mod, and it changes so many things you won't believe the difference.

I only go to assigned grid if it's around BF17

Nah, mostly I go to wherever they say, do the 24 hours and look for something more juicy - 'Sorry, Sir, bad weather - couldn't get a location fix for weeks.'
