so I spent some hard earned renown on radar. Does it do anything? I had 1 contact in about 5 patrols. I had a heading, went that direction but it never updated and I never found anything. I still have the reciept, can i get a refund?

Remember, in most circumstances, when you use active radar, you can be detected at roughly twice the range at which you can detect another ship.
Just like you can detect escort radar long before they can get a return from you. I consider it a waste of renown.

It depends on when you have taken it.
Early radar is fixed and only really tells you what is dead ahead. Later radar will give all round contacts without you needing to turn the boat, but will also attract lots of nasties using radar detection equipment. it is okay for keeping in touch with single merchants in fog but not much else, in my opinion |

I just use the radar warner, I dont really care if a merchant is coming to close, because most of the time I will see it before it sees me, but destroyers are another story.

I don't find it to be an entire waste of renown depending on the type of radar and where you do your patrols. Whenever it's night, and I'm patrolling near enough to land that Hawker Hurricanes, or similar non-radar equipped craft can get at me, I find it helpful. You can't detect their radar emissions, as they have none, and your crew can't always see them coming in time. The rotating radar types with enough range have helped somewhat with this problem. (Remember that radar is supposed to detect aircraft at much greater distances than surface objects.) Not that it comes up often, but if I don't have a snorkel and need recharging, it's there. Other than this, I rarely use the thing.
