Default Damage Control

Okay I just started playing SH4. I went through the manual (which isn't all that great) and did the tutorials. I tried a mission and it didn't go so well...How do you get the Damage Control team to fix things? I figured out how to move different crew members into the team, but when I clicked the button to get them into action, none of my damaged areas seemed to get fixed. I'm sure its pretty simple but I'm still a newb

Go to battle stations, move men if necessary to damage control positions and prioritize the damage areas listed. Fix bulkhead damage if any first.

It depends on the type of damage too. After moving crew members into the damage control slots and clicking the "activate damage control team" button, the crew works automatically, but only on items that are repairable. Guns cannot be fixed while submergered, hull damage can only be repaired at home port, same (usually) with torpedo tubes. Depending on the extent of the damage, ending your patrol is sometimes the only way to get things fixed.
Welcome abroad.

External items are particularly prone to being destroyed rather than damaged, meaning you cannot repair them.
