Default INCREDIBLE FIND!

This thread started by http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=186112

Led me to accidentally come across what may be the most important document in SH history, at least where torpedoes are concerned. It contains the complete story of the German Torpedo Crisis, including the exact date of the order to stop using the magnetic pistols, the date of the order to start using the new ones and the fact that starting in 1943 they did indeed have a switch that would enable both impace and magnetic pistols or impact only!

Now I have a chance to give this document a thorough read.

Have just got up to page 56. I had no idea this had happened.

October 1939, HMS Nelson hit by 2 torpedoes fired by U-56, a Type II U-boat. Said torpedoes just bounced harmlessly off the hull.

What surprised me was who was on board at the time.

"Inside one of her many compartments, the captain's cabin probably, Admiral Sir Charles Forbes, Commander in Chief Home Fleet, was discussing the present state of security of the Royal Navy's main bases at Scapa Flow, Loch Ewe, and Rosyth. Seated at the table with him was the First Sea Lord, Admiral of the Fleet Sir Dudley Pound, as well as the then First Lord of the Admiralty, Winston Churchill"

As the author of the document states, this story is one of the great 'what ifs' of the war.

Very good find Sailor Steve, thanks mate
