Merchant type names (for OM)

So I've started playing the Operation Monsun mod for SH4, and I noticed that most of the merchants have names consisting of letters and dashes. something like "K-KM-K-F Freighter" or something like that. Is this some measurement of the hull or is it where the ships were built? I have no idea...
If this has already been asked, I apologize. I really didn't know how to phrase this in the search engine to get relevant results.
