The capital ships gets it in mid to late 43 I believe. The escorts don't have it until October 44 or so.However, some full fledged DD's such as the Yagumo have it in 43.

Late 43 you can purchse a Radar Warning device that will pick up enemy radar signals(look at the nav map, its a flashing line almost like a sonar line but you will pick it up from many miles away, much further than your sound gear or radar will detect them) and sometimes your crew will give you an audible warning.

There is a mod out there that makes IJN radar realistic so you can pull off a night surface attack even when they have it.Search the forums(i would but no time at the moment )

The reason I'm asking is, I was attacked from the edge of the horizon by the escorts of a task force. I could barely see their smoke with binoculars so I doubt they could have seen me since a sub is most decidedly smaller than a destroyer. This was February of 42'. It was mid daytime, calm seas and a clear sky. Is it possible that they could have actually seen me from that far even though all I could see was their smoke or did one of the capital ships in the task force have radar that early and alert the escorts? Basically, I want to know is this normal for TMO or a broken file?

A basic rule of thumb is: if you can see the deck of the ship, it can see you too. You're not so far as you though. I think that you're only trully impossible to see, if all you can see from the other target is its mast, the rest being hidden behind the earth's curvature - as are you.

Hum. ...

Only now I thought of this: does SH4 has a curved map, or a flat, medieval map?

The earth is flat in game, their visuals are based on presets, mods differ, other values like fog, light and crew settings can effect them for better or worse. Another big issue is the profile of your sub, is it broadside to them or narrow.

In the clear day with no fog I find 6nms with TMO is safe. Still, they may have radar, so you have to consider that.

Some other possible explanations...

There are different levels of enemy skill. One or more of the ships in your task force might have had elite skill ratings. Also, If there were capital ships in the TF, they can see farther than any other vessels.

Jeeeeez! I never thought of that! We're dealing with a flat ocean then? Awful.

Some mod should take care of that.
