I have been away for quite a long time SUBSIM. After the urge to play SH3 the other day, discovering the woes of Windows 7 and Star-force (or whatever it's called), 3 hours of trial and error, $10 for the D2D copy and one download of GWX later I have returned to sink tonnage in the name of the Fatherland.
Right out of the gate, I decide that If I'm going to play again, I might as well learn the real way and play with 100% difficulty. I spend 2 hours learning and perfecting the Manual Targeting for the Torpedoes. I start on September 1 39', Wilhelmshaven with 2nd Flotilla, and set out for AN32 at 7kts. I approach the 3/4 mark of the journey when the war breaks out. Deciding that I do not wish to end up as a tally mark on some Flyboy's fuselage, I head through the pass north of Scapa. Uneventful up to this point, as I have yet to even spy a coastal freighter. 24hrs in the Patrol Grid and 2 aircraft induced dives later, I depart for more fruitful hunting grounds... AM53. I arrive a few days later. Fog so thick you could cut it with a knife (excuse the old saying) and waves so high you would need oxygen tanks to remain at the top. The sonar man picks out a merchant headed strait for us. We dive and home in on his sonar, as visual tracking is out of the question. A lucky break with the periscope reveals a 10,500 tons (confirmed after) of Merchantman headed past us to the north, perpendicular to our heading at about 1500m. I'm not worried about the periscope being spotted, as I can barely make out the ship well enough to make out the type. After 3 minutes of double checking the calculations (rough seas and all), I decide for a two tube salvo, with a 1 degree spread. The torpedoes are away, and seconds later one detonates aft of amidships. She slows for about 4 minutes or so before the Das Boot cheers and information at the bottom of the screen confirm the kill. God I missed this game ![]() EDIT: Original Patrol Grid was AM99, not AN32 Last edited by Kaleun Volk; 06-02-11 at 10:05 PM. |

Welcome back.
It was a great read. AM99? That's an even bigger "Wow" than AM53. Enjoy, and keep us posted. |
