Default Windows 8 unveiled, get ready for the: "OH NO WHAT HAVE THEY DONE?!"

http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/01/m...et-prototypes/

First impressions? Looks like they want to transform the PC in to a GIANT IPAD.... NNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
It looks great for Touch screen Mobile devices and Tablet PCs etc, but on a conventional desktop or laptop? Errr ....I guess we wait to see this 'other' version that is mentioned in the article.
They say it will work great with keyboard and mouse, but looking at that demo I gotta admit it is pretty hard to see how.
Still Id like to think we can (somehow) trust MS not to screw this up.

Also i do wonder what all my legacy 'Pre Windows 8' apps & games will look like? maybe a a bunch of ugly white text boxes? mmmm all the "personality" of a shopping list!

Though they dont explicitly mention it, I can only assume they will try to emulate Apples business model too by opening an Appstore for the PC
If so thats a double edged sword I guess.

A bit of patching, a bit of fixes and a lot of consumer feedback. And a touchscreen monitor that shouldn't be too expensive once this creates a high demand. Let's not be pesimistic (nor too optimistic).

Problem is, it will work with touchscreen laptops, but my PC monitor is almost a meter (3ft) away from me, touching the screen is useless

Same here, though I remember when Windows vista was in development (called project Longhorn), and that took another 2 years for it to come out.

I have it for 2 months now.

The best thing would be, having two separate monitors, one laxing flat on the desk and the other for wieving. Or one touch-pad on the desk. Dont worry, the geeks will find a solution to it better then the people at MS

If they follow by their 2-2 rule (every second version of Windows is a good one, the inbetween versions are bad ones), after XP was good and Vista was bad and Windows 7 was good, Windows 8 may go bad again.

Tradition is tradition.

A touchscreen is nice for painting software, really, but else I do not understand the hype about it. but I also do not understand the hype over ipads, smartphones and the like, so maybe I am just living in the wrong age. I just think it is stupid to spend so much attention to things like this.

Windows 7 user over here since 3 months. And a very happy one. I refuse to bother myself with just another OS again that soon. Ask again in 8 years or so.

All I can think about is how icky the screen is going to get from all that touching. Especially if you're eating Cheetohs while computing.

That. I have no desire to clean a monitor every bloody day. (can't stand prints at all. If you want to piss me off, come over and just touch the screen ever so slightly, never fails )

Couldn't care less about Win8. My PC is not a tablet.

Yep, touch screen and desktops dont mix, just for second lets pretend our monitor is a touch screen,

1) First move in closer so you can reach more easily, do your eyes hurt yet? Yes? Good -
2) now point around your screen with your finger for 1 minute and see how tired your arm gets.
3) Now imagine theres an on-screen keyboard...

Carple tunnel syndrome and blindness anyone?
The solution would be to lay the display flat on the table... oh wait now I have neck cramps and back pain
I can see the advertising campaign: "I am now crippled and Windows 8 was my Idea"

@Jimbo, Same here mate, Ive only had it year meself.

Clearly they are responding to the iPad. Even Apple are not trying to mix the UI's. I'll reserve judgement until I can see it for real.

Looks like Windowsphone interface.
