Context: I chased a couple of aux cruisers led by a Southampton-class from the Moray Firth to AN14. They were making 15kts so I got in close behind and loosed a couple of eels while targets were traveling straight. (Thought each would take at least 2 torps to sink - how wrong I was!) First eel hit rear ship while second did not. A wee while later I notice both aux cruisers are burning so conclude my second eel was also successful. To my amazement, both ships sink after a while with no further effort on my part. I get two 'ship sunk' icons on the map, but am dismayed to find only one of the cruisers is listed in the captain's log. Is it possible another u-boot took out the other cruiser? Would be an amazing coincidence (tho' I have reason to suspect another in the area thanks to a radio message I received near start of chase).
[chased light cruiser to AN12 and downed 'er with 2 torps and two cheeky deck gun firings :-) ] On a related note: what a thrill to meet (for the first time) relatively large naval vessels with no real ability to deal with subs. Serpentining aside, the trio remained on-course throughout chase, and only fired on me if I got too close (<1500m). This following my downing of 12 swordfish (and loss of 3 flak gunners ![]()

An unfortunate, but not uncommon occurence. I've had it both ways.
A confirmed kill in the log with no icon, and red icon with no confirmed kill. Then, of course, there's the no icon/no kill, with lots of wailing and gnashing of teeth and a huge debris field. ![]()

The only time your sure to get credit is if you receive the message "She's going down".

It is unfortunate, but it happens. Consider it as an element of realism. I'm sure more than one kaleun had to dive to avoid destroyers without being able to confirm the attack results, especially if they could only send one eel at a ship.

and then there's the anchored ships that mysteriously sink all by themselves just as you're finishing a long, slow, and dangerous submerged approach into thier harbor.
![]() Again, red sunk icon and nothing on the killboard.
