We're coming up on the 70th anniversary of the sinking of the Hood too, as well as the Greek and Crete campaigns.

Oberon,
This is a weekend that WWII aircraft and vehicles are displayed. Most are driven and flown. They represent as many involved in WWII as they can. They stage battles with people in proper uniform, both German and US. Japanese as well. There are USO shows. Just an over all cool experience if one can attend.

I wish we had similar collections of aircarft over here. There are a few single seaters and trainers, but no flying heavies or even WWII mediums down under any more.
Might have to hope on a plane one year and head over for it. |

Very nice lineup. A Superfortress, a Black Widow, even a S.O.B. 2nd Class.

I'd love to see that Black Widow up close. One of my favourite Allied planes. Wish it were modelled in IL-2.

I got to see that SuperFortress "FiFi"(unless they got another one flying which I doubt) in Daytona Beach back in 97 or so just so happened to be in town on leave at the time.I went through the ground tour but it was still pretty damn cool to see the cockpit and the rest of "the office" the old man that was giving the tour had flown in 29s in Korea and he even let me go though the tunnel to get to the gunners stations in the back. The cost of going for a ride was too steep for my blood and once you have ridden on a noisy C-130 you already know more or less what a large prop planes feels like.
Reminds me weren't some volunteers from one of the cities where they made B29s making one just as they did in WWII(though not as fast) that they where going to display in a museum? Is this true or am I nuts? I also heard at some point that a group was contemplating trying to make a B-36 flyable I think that would be very hard to do in deed but to see "Magnesium Over Cast" that would be nice. Wish I had the time to go to this event maybe next year. |
