Default Problem with the 180° minus bearing method

Hello sailors,

I'm in 1941, sailing onboard USS Pickerel, and now my sonarmen have located a LMT, headed course 201 degrees true, so I maneuver the boat to be exactly parallel to the guy, and now he's on bearing 250 relative, and my firing bearing is 260 with an AOB of 60 starboard , and he just keeps going unharmed. As a side note, I've tracked his course with two pings when he was first detected at 25 km away, then when he was 14 kms away. Connect the dots and you got yourself a true course yeah? Does wind have any effect in the game given its direction 101 and speed 10 m/s? Would it drive him faster? and is there a fix to the speed dial? I meant is there a time limit to when to obtain readings from stadimeter in order to get an accurate consistent reading?

The whole issue, is that I cant get a fixed course based on stadimeter speed deduction button. Should I try the radio contact report message course? I mean its an estimate..

take a look:

this is the setup and if you like to try it be my guest. Note that I'm on stock 1.5 only, with observation color filter red mod only. Unpack to Documents/SH4/Data/Cfg/RichSavedGames then boot the game and load the save named "Setup Ready". Post a vid if you will.

Shooting with that much gyro angle is a pretty if'fy proposition at best.

Two range pings will not give you a very good course plot unless you have a good visual contact with the target. ie able to lock on with the scope and set your sonar to that bearing and than ping. If you're sonar is not centered on the target the range will be off. Without good range you really don't know if you're paralleling his course or not.

Without a good course plot it's difficult to get a good speed or AoB.
Looks like you're shooting at a pretty long range. Long range+big gyro angle on the torpedo+inaccurate speed and Aob=miss.

I'd try stadimeter at about 3 minutes if possible. More than two. If you plot the target correctly you should have a good course BUT I don't think the stadimeter will give you a good enough speed unless you're at short range. I never use the thing so I don't know much about it.
I haven't played contacts off for a long time, so I a little rusty.

Don't see the position Keeper on as well so I not sure what shooting method you're using???

Me I would have just shot this guy with a constant bearing shot at short range.

Wind has an effect on your boat but I don't think any others.

hmmm ...

On a replay of the save, I actually got 4 of 4 eels in.. Maybe it was angle problem or alignment problem...

Got me a nice fat 10k tonne tanker. The beauty of this method is that you can direct fire from all tubes thereby maintaining a hit on virtually anything in their spreadout cone.

Thanks magic.

If you can get into a convoy using a parallel course method is good but I would only use it at short range. The very high gyro angles make for difficult shots and any error in your data is magnified.

Glad you got her but save some for me.

Hey Solo,
I was just wondering, concerning the target speed issue. Is there a difference in the speed from the radio report and the speed from the Stadimeter? I've always wondered about the accuracy between the two.

Now when following a target at 180º AoB, I've actually had better luck with the 90º gyro shot than a shot straight at the stern of the victim. Small course changes during the torpedo run will cause the straight shot to miss, but a shot coming in at 90º to the beam is darned difficult to turn away from!

Sometimes a large gyro angle will buy you an artificial reef.
