Default Back to SHIII!!!!!

Hi Folks, im new here, but not new to the Silent Hunter series, having played it since SHII. A few days ago some money was burning a whole in my pocket and i decided to bite the bullet and buy SH 5 on steam. I quickly discovered that it was total crap and, highly discouraged, i vented my remaining burning money on SHIII. This is now my third copy of SH3, having lost my last copy in a cross country move. I can say that ive probably paid for a couple of developers lunches.

But being out of the loop for awhile as far as mods go, i came here to this website and discovered a few really big ones. I chose GWX as my supermod of choice for my SHIII, and omg, the manual. Makes me miss those big paper manuals of yesteryear. I hope to be posting some screenshots soon, as ill be starting a career soon with SH3 Commander.

I do have one question about the forums. How do i make the threads in the forum show the oldest posts first? right now the newest posts are on top and it is driving me crazy.

Thanks for any help in advance and ill see you out in the wolf packs

hmm. i dont like hearing this. i go to the sh5 forum regulally and it seems they are making headway. the photo section looks amazing and the mods sound good too. i was thinking of gearing up my comp. to cope with it - well, not just to cope with sh5 but to upgrade with this in mind.

i hope FFIF you can expand on the 'crap' bit of it - what you dont like etc and maybe what you do like too.

and welcome to SH3

Ty for the tip on fixing the oldest to newest threads...much better.

Well, as far as me saying SH5 is total crap, i guess i was discouraged by the performance of the sim...i went into it thinking id expect the same fps as shIV gave me. The last time i ran SHIV, i was using a 2.0ghz dual core with a decent 1gb nvidia vid card and got playable fps out of it. Now im on a quad core at 2.93ghz with a monster vid card and sh5 was a slide show as far as fps goes...so i dialed down all the video options and still not even close to playable.

the reason i bought sh3 instead of maybe going back to sh4 (although i thoroughly enjoyed sh4) was i wanted to drive u boats. And SHIII is simply the best u boat simulator ever. And it runs awesome on my system with GWX. Im talking 80+ fps (tested with fraps) on this system. And honestly, shIII with GWX doesnt look that bad compared to SH5 graphically. Im kind of sad sh5 is the way it is. I am all for furthuring this genre, but sh5 was a big disappointment for me.

I dont want to end this on a down note, i am very excited to get back to SHIII. Im happy to see this forum alive and well, and the mods keep churning out for it. To all that helped put out GWX, i applaud your efforts. Your mod is simply a work of art. And the manual almost brought tears to my eyes when i say it weighed in at over 600 pages.

You should look into IABL's Merchant fleet mod, sounds like you have the perfect machine to run it!. It'll give the merchies gfx that blow you away. And FM's interior mod.

I did grab IABL's merch mod and the two skin packs for it and i was amazed at how much better the targets look now. The interior mod i also grabbed but when i tried to enable it, it brought up some config conflicts with gwx, so im going to hold off on it for the moment until i get a better idea if it is going to mess up gwx.

i am happy to be back with the sim and community that has brought me so much enjoyment over the years...SH3 is not an old game, the people who play and mod it are the ones who have gotten a bit older and wiser.

The New Interiors mod is fine to enable over GWX, what it would most likely conflict with is some other optional GWX mod you've activated. For sure it will conflict with Integrated Orders because it overwrites the commands .cfg files, but you can make it work by manually editing them.

There are instructions included with New Interiors for manually adding the necessary stuff to your existing commands .cfg files so you don't have to overwrite them.

If there is any way to get New Interiors to work for you I highly recommend it if you're going to be playing a Type VII.

Yup, if you go at the historically correct times, it's actually fairly easy. Just follow priens path.

You'll find HMS Royal Oak anchored there from the 4th to the 14th October.

after explaining to my wife why i was cussin at my computer and how my nights may get a lot longer due to long patrols, i have SHIII running exactly the way i want it to. SHIII+GWX+Merch Mod=the best u boat sim ever. I had some issues getting the merch mod to work, had several CTD's and reinstalls but i read through the merch mod thread and it mentioned a 4gb patch tool for 64 bit computers. I downloaded that and made it zap the sh3.exe and fired up a career and then after a lengthy load time during which the progress bar stopped where it had been ctd-ing, and all the sudden...Not so long ago...., and bam in in the control room and everything is working.

So to people who are having problems getting the merch mod to work, try the 4gb patch. especially if youre on a 64 bit system. It worked for me.

VERY VERY satisfied with shIII now.

Just one quick question...i enabled AA through the NVIDIA control panel, as well as AF, but does SHIII support AF? The AA makes it look gorgeous, but i didnt know if AF was working or not.
