Default New Graphics Card Suggestions

Hi Guys,

As my computer runs fairly choppy and slow with SH3 when the time compressions is high, and especially when im in port. It also does the same with GWX, so i think its time i get myself a new graphics card.

I currently run off the integrated graphics of my Intel DG965RY motherboard.
My processors is a pentium D 3.2ghz duel core and I have 6gb ram (even though windows only detects 3.5gb).

I was thinking about getting the PNY Nvidia GeForce GT 240 1GB GDDR3 Graphics Card. The 512mb version is ranked at #34 on this list: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=166596

I was wondering if anybody else has this graphics card, or if anybody knows how well this graphics card will improve performance on my computer?

Im after completely smooth game play at maximum time compression, and when attacking ships in port with GWX or other mods installed to increase ship traffic.

Thanks all.

I had the Nvidia Geforce 7600 GT and everything was in perfect order in SH3 + GWX even at the highest TC or when attacking convoys or ports.

I now have the Asus Nvidia GTX460 just to play the NFS 11 Hot pursuit.

Any of these two will do the job.

Yeah, onboard video is not the way to go!

However being 6 years old, SHIII is not terribly demanding on graphics, so you're not going to have trouble if you get an even halfway-recent nvidia or ATI card. Something like a GeForce 240 might be good for you price-wise and will do all SHIII needs.

Keep in mind that the bigger limiting factor is likely to be your processor. e.g. I can guarantee that perky's experience with harbor traffic bogging down the game is not a graphics issue but one to do with processor speed.

Remove the mod, rush out to the hunting grounds and get stuck in.

Hmmm...processor makes a huge difference then cos I have the same card (mine is the OCuk XXX version) running on a Win7 machine, i3 3.6Ghz overclocked to 4.2Ghz and with 4GB timing-matched RAM...and when I am near to land (especially) or units at sea I get stutters and lag when at anything over 256 on the TC.

Strangely, it ran MW2 faultlessly at highest settings - you would think that would be a harder test of the system but I dunno...

Yeah another user mentioned the processor. I got put off however by searching google and most of the threads I came across said that processors have very little to do with games and how fast they run.

I managed to get the game to run smooth when I am on the bridge in port by over clocking the graphics card, however when I sailed out to sea and increased the time compression it bogged down and got really choppy at x128.

Im running a 3.2ghz celeron d. Im considering upgrading to an intel i7 but that means new motherboard and new ram as well which is going to cost me around £400 total.

Do you think it will be worth it?

Way ahead of you lol, iv just removed it. I was hoping to be able to sink more ships as i like attacking ports

You have an i3 and the same is still happening? I was hoping a processor upgrade would solve the problems. Its mad how some people are having issues when others have lesser systems with no problems.

Have a look in the SH4 stickies, I think there is something there about fine tuning graphics cards - you never know.

Here it is, hope it helps: http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=128517

My configuration is : Intel core 2 duo CPU E8400 @3.00 GHz 2GB RAM Windows XP Professional 2002 SP3 + Asus Nvidia GTX460 graphics card.

It runs perfectly both SH3 + GWX at any TC (with no problems) and the more demanding NFS 11 HOT PURSUIT II

Any CTDs are not caused by my machine , I think.
